    >>> Problem >>>

    I bought an external keyboard for my laptop. After I plugged it in and started using the new keyboard the laptop's built in keyboard was mixed up! Meaning that some of the keys don't represent the right characters anymore. For example when I press letter 'J' my system prints out number '1'.
    I guess it's got something to do with the fact that the external keyboard's layout is different(Russian) from the laptop's.

    Tried all of these:
    - looked through the manual (I was optimistic :)
    - fysically removed the external keyboard from the laptop
    - removed the keyboard drivers from device manager

    >>> Hardware and software >>>

    Laptop: Acer Aspire 5024 series (bought from Finland)
    Keyboard: Trust Slimline Item no. 14342 (USB, Russian layout)
    OS: WinXP Home Edition

    you need to set the keyboard on the laptop back to be the correct settings, im guessing its in the UK or US format

    go to the control panel and open up "regional and language settings"
    click on the languages tab and click on details.

    click on "ADD" and select UK or US from the list that comes up, then press ok.
    and that should be it

    The language setting in Windows hasn't changed. It's still Finnish as it should be.

    hmmm thats wierd,

    have you tried a system restore to a point before you first used the keyboard?

    Ok. I restored the system to a point before using the keyboard. Seems that it worked for the problem.

    I knew it might help but I wanted it to be the last resort, because it was before christmas that I first encountered this problem and I left it unsolved for a long time. So I now have a lot of reinstalling to do due to the system restore...

    Still wondering what actually changed in my system...Might be that I undo the system restore and fight against the mighty Windows to solve the problem without system restore :)

    Thanks a lot for the help! :)

    Ok, problem solved! I feel very stupid now. There's this thing called NumLock...well, It was on!
    There was nothing funny going on in my system. I had just turned on the NumLock by accident in some point. Laptop's NumLock uses the letter keys as a numpad.
    In one word, PEBCAK. (problem exists between chair and keyboard)

    Thanks everybody for help!
