I have tried about 10 different fixes for this stupid burner and I keep throwing up coasters! It starts the burn and fails at 1%.

A few quick notes that may narrow it down

I have swapped IDE cables so it's not that.
It was working maybe no less then 3 weeks ago.
    I have tried nero 6 & 7.
My other DVD burner works flawlessly.
I used to be able to burn to dvds at once with no issues.
    I have 2gb of ram.
I have tried 2 different brands of media BOTH OF WHICH WORKED BEFORE.
I have tried different types of files to burn, from different hdds.
It almost always freezes at 1% but once at 3%
It does read media still and recognizes blanks, and discs with content on them as well.
    Firmware is fully updated.
I can successfully rip/encode a dvd from this drive. I can play games/music/read date from this drive.

Note: I have tried different versions of Nero 7 as well. The earliest one, and the latest neither worked. I have uninstalled/reinstalled numerous times.

Honestly I have no clue what it could be I have read through this and cdfreaks and am getting no where. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreaciated.

You are burning too close to the edge of the disc, set your target size in DVD Shrink or Recode to 4300 to avoid this.

Not familiar with these discs, but suspect they are not great. Try some quality Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).

    and

The above two errors confirm that the discs are the culprit. In Media specific there should be actual numbers instead of all zeroes if your discs are being recognized. The second error states that your burner can't cope with what you want to do with the discs you are using.

Everything else looks fine, firmware is current...Nero is a little old, but shouldn't be the cause of your problems. If you want to update Nero to 6.6.0.18 here ya go:

    http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

The latest version of Nero 6 is actually 6.6.1.4, but has yet to have the wrinkles ironed out of it yet...so I would stick with 6.6.0.18 because it is known to be a working version.

    Edit: I missed this one...

You are using DVD-R's which cannot be booktyped, disable high compatability mode when burning with -R's.

See honestly I would blame the media but right now im trying to different types of disc one no name and one is maxell. But both have/had worked on this dvd burner for quite some time up until recently. Also the options you suggest turning off, are those something you have to turn off or adjust in the first place? I have never adjusted anything with dvd shrink. Every dvd is supposed to be set at 4.35gbs.

Oddly though dvd's are having trouble (blanks) being recognized and that is starting to make sense that it may be the media but not the medias fault. So if it is not recognizing blank media properly what would you suggest? That the drive is dead?

You have to set the output size in DVD Shrink to 4300... Edit/Preferences/Preferences tab, in the drop down menu select custom and type in 4300.

To check the burn settings in DVD Shrink, after you've edited out what you don't want and hit backup, go to burn settings...it is the last tab in the new window. Make sure that the booktype and high compatability mode are not checked if you are using -R blanks.

Have you tried to create an ISO image with DVD Shrink and burn with DVD Decrypter or Imgburn?

Even data Dvds aren't working so I don't know what's up. My hp 740b is working fine though.

It just gets to me because it literally worked a couple weeks or less ago.

No. But the thing is that it was working fine the way it was before hand so I don't get why I would have to find a solution by doing another method.
