How to convert MPEG files into smaller format

    I'm trying to create space on my hard drive and have a few large MPEG files - i noticed that AVI files (of the same play length) are much smaller than the MPEG files: is there a way of converting MPEG files into a format which is smaller in size?

    AVI files are smaller than MPEG files, I think you are the first person to ever come across this, unless they are DIVX files.
