I've tried burning a DVD several times now. I've even tried running a simulation.

Every time it gives me the Illegal Disc error and NERO Error Code 1046 can be seen in the Log File.

A while back my burner quit a disc with a "Power Management failure" message and a sound that made me run across the room to see what happened.

I have since burned DVD's and they worked, so I know that the media is OK.

But this on keeps screwing up.

I've tried creating a DVD from the VOB files directly - I've tried creating an Image file and then use Copy DVD.

They all fail when they have to write the disc (the image plays well in Daemon Tools) - even the last try with simulation failed to even finish that.

Is my Burner fried or is something cheaper wrong??

The latest firware update may be KYS3? It doesn't sound like it is a match for the KYR1 fw that your log posts. You may have to update it.

3 of those channels are in pio mode. Go into device manager under IDE-ATA/Atapi controllers. Uninstall the drivers for these drives that are off. These are in pio mode and that is not good. Uninstall and reboot,1 channel at a time.

Make sure those IDE channels are in dma or UDMA mode. Pick up a couple of rw discs and give it a go.

I've tried rummaging around Sony's Website, and it seems they won't aknowledge making my Burner. So I can't find any useful Firmware that I'm certain will work.

    Any help with that?

As far as the drivers go.

What you suggest is not listed under ATA/Atapi controllers.

So I changed the Primary/Secondary IDE controllers to use DMA if available instead as it seems that is what you meant.

I'll wait for news on the firmware front before I try burning again.

Open up the tree for IDE-ATA/Atapi controllers.

You'll see primary and secondary, maybe even 2 primary and 2 secondary controllers.
Start with the top primary, double click on it/click advanced tab and look for: UDMA/DMA/or if available, mines says UDMA5

Double click second primary,if you have it.Advanced/look for same UDMA/DMA/or if available.

Do the same to the secondary/s controllers.

The controllers that say pio mode, click the drive tab/uninstall/reboot. Do the same to the other 2 controllers.

You've got 2 dvd-rom drives and your burner stuck in pio mode. Not good! See if you can get it back to dma of udma.

Nero 7.0.5.4 is the buggy one, the version in this log is the stable one. Mine is the same except it is 7.0.1.4b but the log says the same thing without the b in there. Just an FYI.. :)

Ok now I got both Primary and Secondary IDE controllers to say using UDMA. Primary is 5 secondary is 2

My HDD is alone on the primary and both my DVD and DVD-Burner share the secondary.

The last Generic Drive is the Daemon Tools Ghost drive it uses to work.

Does anyone know where I can find updated firmware for my Burner?

(If you say Sony Website please tell me where as I can't find it there)

You can get the latest firmware update for your burner here, it should be KYS3, enter your burner's model# (DW-Q28A) in the search field and click search. Just click on KYS3 to download the file.

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

It's a .rar file so you're going to need a utility like winrar to extract the files with (if you don't already have one), here's a link to get it if you need it (winrar 3.51).
