Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that an upgrade of the Nero Vision Express on my main machine allowed me to burn a file that I had been having problems with for a long time. This file would freeze up the machine and I'd have to reboot while other files in the same group burned fine. Then I tried to reinstall to my second computer from my factory Nero disk of Nero Express 6 v 6.3.1.23B and the disk wouldn't load. The drive itslef sounded like it was ready to die. A replacement drive made the same slow pokey noise so it had to be the disk right? How can I get a replacement factory disk? This Nero came with an OEM Benq 1620 drive. Then, since a clean reinstall was not possible, I used the link from the Nero Express install and seledcted the downlownload of 6.6.1.4 for this machine and the current Nero Vision Express. The Download goes ok. But the install process stops at the user serial number. I put it in several times and the 'next' button refuses to light up and accept the serial number. How weird is that? So there's something screwey between the fresh download and whatever codes are needed to make an install to a second computer from the factory disk. Needless to say I have done this before without the present problems. The second machine is considerably older but is running the same Windows 98Se disk as I use regularly. How do I check for the serial number again? Lastly is there any customer discount plan to get a full box of Nero with manuals etc. Or at least get a replacement disk?
I would uninstall Nero, run Nero General Clean tool and then attempt to re install. The general Clean Tool will remove any remaining fragments of Nero so you should be OK for a fresh install. If you have a genuine serial number there is no reason why you can't install on both your comps.
After using the clean tool, can I reinstall from the zip file that the download comes on or will the uninstall wipe everything? FWIW a recent upgrade of Nero Vision Express to NVE3 cured a problem I was having in getting a particular file. Are these downloads subject to errors very often? Oh, other thing is I'm getting a 'trial period expired' error on that second PC. So my install from factory much be blown some way. Can I run these clean tools from removable media? I have thne on one machine and not the other.
Ok, I copied the clean tools to a floppy and ran it that way. My reinstall appeared to go ok. BUT I have this weirdness between the 2 installs: On first machine with the burner installed I have the option to make a dvd on the older with just a CDROM I don't. Can this be traced to the kind of burner that is attached? Does Nero modify the menus automatically? My goal was just to view an available file for processing but it seems that hardware detection defeats this.
