On a few threads there is a trial and error method for laser calibration. I tried it and i think i messed up my PS2. Original PS2, psx, and DVD's still boot but DVD-R ps2 backups don't (original reson for recalibration).

I read on a few webpages that there was an alternate W wire location for Magic 3.1 chips. This in combination with laser calibration will fix the DVD-R discs not booting supposedly... I tried this and bad things happened

When I try to view discs in the PS2 browser mode it takes forever to load the disc or it just stops trying.

Can anyone help me out with more detail on laser recalibration, how much do I have to turn the screw from it's extreme right (clockwise) position?

How can I measure if its good?

Any thoughts other than I shouldn't have done it in the first place?

Thanks,
-Talesk

go to gameconsolerepair.com they have a good tutorial on how to fix your laser. It consists of keeping the cover off and having discs and just trying different settings, it worked for me a while back. http://pub94.ezboard.com/fgameconsolerepairforumfrm3.showMessage?topicID=1206.topic

Hi Talesk,

I did the same thing....I have magic3 and have used it for 3-4 months, then it started having booting problems. Originals work, ps1 backups work, but all DVDR's are having problems, to the point where they aren't working at all, with the exception of a DVDR movie...

I did the alternate W1 and it didn't help.

Did you follow this link and did it help?

No, it didn't work. Still give it a try, easy to recover from if it doesn't work.

Use a long handled 7/64 hex key for this, makes it easy to turn.

Be sure to mark your original position with a PERMENANT marker (CD pen will do).
