Hello to everyone. I am looking for help! I am backing up movies. I always use DVD Shrink and save as an ISO Image File. Then I "Burn Image to disc" using Nero at 4x speed. I prefer using DVD-R's and have about half spindles (100) left of two types: TDK Printable 16x DVD-R, Verbatim 16x DVD-R. These two types worked very well with two other dvd drives I'd had in the past (and no longer have access to). I have been very successful using these ripping/shrinking/burning methods. But I now have a new computer and it has a new DVD recording drive and I'm running into problems I've never had before. The new drive is a Memorex Dual Format DVD Recorder. It burns at 16x DVD+R, and 8x DVD-R. I can use DVD Shrink successfully but I'm not able to burn. I keep getting the error "Burn process failed at 4x" and "Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 Illegal Disc". I've tried burning at slower speeds too, to no avail. This happens with both brands of 16x DVD-R's. The drive and Nero does recognize the media, but it doesn't give me the option to burn at 16x (understandable considering the limitations of the burner). I tried burning with the same methods with 8x DVD+R Arita media. This was successful. However, I only have a few of these discs and tons of the 16x DVD-R's. I could only think of one thing that's messing me up. My drive burns DVD-R's at 8x, and the media I'm using is 16x. But since I'm overriding all of this and choosing to burn at an even lower speed of 4x, I don't see why I'm having a problem. Any help would be most appreciated. Since I am a newbie I may not have given you the info you need to help me figure out this problem. If more is needed just tell me what and I'll try to find it for you. Ashj, Thanks for your response. The Nero I am using was the Nero packaged with the drive. I am currently updating to the version you recommended. Sorry about being mistaken about the drive recognizing my media. I assumed that since it gave me burn speed options (2x, 2.4x and 4x) when I put the disc into the drive, at least it was recognizing it. I took a look at the link you gave me about what media worked with this drive. The ones I was using wasn't listed, but in general the few recomemdations were all 8x DVD+/-R's. Am I wrong to think that a 8x DVD-R burner should be able to burn 16x media at a 4x rate? It's not like I'm trying to burn the media at a rate not supported by the drive... Or, am I just an idiot and it's common sense that a drive that burns 8x DVD-R can ONLY accept media 8x or lower, no matter what speed you actually burn at? So far that kinda seems like the case since I was successful with 2 types of media that was 8x (HP 8x DVD-R and Arita 8x DVD+R), but I'm almost out of them! If so, bah! I have tons of 16x and a quick trip to the office store yields zippo 8x DVD+/- media. Seems like it's kinda old technology because only 16x and up was stocked. Maybe on a side note... Anybody know a good place to buy 8x DVD-R media that is dependable but won't break the bank? Thanks again and I'll keep you updated on the Nero Update!
Sorry! One other bit concerning my available memory. I too noticed the 76% memory usage. But I didn't have any other qppilactions open at the time! Only Nero. I even restarted the computer to start fresh. Maybe my computer just has low memory to begin with? It's kinda a cheapie. Umm.. Here are my computer specs.. AMD Sempron 3000+ processor 512 MB DDR DRAM Memory 80 GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA hard drive Maybe this info might explain something? Again, thanks loads for your assistance.

It is low, but not critical... your system has 512mb so it always take quite a chunk of that when burning. I assume your unplugged from the net and have shut down anti virus programs etc. also...remember to keep your burners Firmware and burning and ripping software up to date. i) Make sure all your drivers are up to date (including main board) ii) Defragment your hard disk at least once a week. iii) Keep your burn speed to half the media rating. On the media side I'm in the UK and use www.svp.co.uk Generally, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, are two of the highest rated media. If your in the USA or Europe then I'm sure a few others will be able to give you good pointers on places to buy good media. Its all about finding media which works best for your burner and particular setup. wishing u luck...ashj
Askj, I want to thank you for your comments and trying to help me figure out my problem. I updated to the version of Nero 6.6.1.4. Unfortunately still no luck. Like you posted earlier, it does seem like this burner's firmware is poorly supported. I've even read excerpts from users online documenting more problems when they tried updating. It makes me hesitant to trust Memorex for the firmware upgrades. All the 8x dics (dvd+r and dvd-r) work without problems. 16x dvd+r's work also. But Verbatim 16x dvd-r discs still don't work. Too bad. I guess I'll just have to stick with the 8x speed (at least when -r's are concerned) to get it to work right, and one day I'll upgrade to a better (or at least better supported) burner. PS.. Hey, anyone out there wanna swap a buncha 16x dvd-r's for 8x ones? Cheers!
