Firmware will help your drive with read & write strategies on media. But if your using poor quality media may not help at help - still recommended though. What brand of disc's are you using? Which program are you using to burn?
Once you download the firmare you'll need to flash your drive. Make sure all progs are shut down, no discs are inserted - then open the .exe file and run. Shouldn't take long - keep the power going - then reboot and you should be set!

I was able to install the firmware, but how do I know if I have the flash? I am taking the manual to the store so I buy compatible disk for it. I do have Macromedia Flash Player 8 and Shockwave installed? Is there a different flash?

The term "flash" is the process of updating your drive with new/current f/w. You flash your drive when you update it's f/w.

You need to tell us what movie you're trying to back up and the programs you are using. If it's a new movie you may need something to get past the encryptions. And maybe a log of the failed burn.
