I was thinking of buying a dvd+DL burner for my computer. How would I know if my stand alone dvd player supports those types of discs?

Typically the newer movies that come out are on a DL disc, if your player will play those it should play a burnt DL. Make sure to get the +R flavored blanks and booktype them for added compatability.

Nero will booktype automatically for you, DVD Decrypter and Imgburn will do it also, but you must set the booktype if your drive supports this feature. As mentioned above only +R discs can be booktyped. Take a look in my sig at this: http://my.afterdawn.com/locoeng/blog_entry.cfm/217
