I've had this problem for a little while, but now it's on every single dvd I burn. Every time I burn a dvd there are playback errors on my dvd player and pc, as if the frames are missing. it also occurs on data-dvds which I burn with Nero.

DVD Writer: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H542A TS07 (ATA) (Samsung)
(According to samsung this product has been discontinued)
    Writing Program: DVD Decrypter
    DVD Manufacturer ID: RITEKG05
    Supported Write Speeds: 2x, 4x
    (I bought them from: http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/cgi-bin2/details.pl?id=ritekpr8x )
    Running Windows 2000 SP4, 256Mb RAM, 60GB maxtor hard drive, 2.40GHz

Note: The website says the discs are 8x, and the box for my burner says it supports 8x writing. could this mean that the discs are fake? I'm always getting recommended these differents discs, and I usually find out they don't work. Does anyone have a decent not too expensive brand+type that I can use without having to worry?

I've made sure that the DMA option is set, I don't run any other programs while burning, I check the discs are clean from dust and scratches and I reboot prior to burning to make sure my system isn't lagged. However, even though nothing is else running, sometimes the buffer will drop to around 60% for around 10 seconds (but the device buffer stays to 98-99%), I suspect that this is where it's usually messing up. I usually write at 4x, I tried 2x which caused the disc to have errors from the start. Are there any system services I need to start or can stop to reduce cpu load?

I checked over a few dvd's I've burnt and the problem usually occurs just after the middle and towards the end of the movie, however 2 recent ones have had problems from the initial start of the disc at the studio logos.

Checked over 2 discs with DVDinfo and got these:

    [First disc]
    Drive - TSSTCORPCD/DVDW TS-H542A
    Media ID Code - RITEKG05
    Media Type - DVD-R
    Read Error list
    1. Error - LBA = 001e9200h
    2. Error - LBA = 001fcd90h
    3. Error - LBA = 001fcd91h
    4. Error - LBA = 001fcd92h
    5. Error - LBA = 001fcd93h
    6. Error - LBA = 001fcd94h
    7. Error - LBA = 001fcd95h
    8. Error - LBA = 001fcd96h
    9. Error - LBA = 001fcd97h
    10. Error - LBA = 001fcd98h
    11. Error - LBA = 001fcd99h
    12. Error - LBA = 001fcd9ah
    13. Error - LBA = 001fcd9bh
    14. Error - LBA = 001fcd9ch
    15. Error - LBA = 001fcd9dh
    16. Error - LBA = 001fcd9eh
    17. Error - LBA = 001fcd9fh
    18. Error - LBA = 001fcda0h
    19. Error - LBA = 001fcda1h
    20. Error - LBA = 001fcda2h

This went up to 78 errors and then finished.

    [Second disc]
    Drive - TSSTCORPCD/DVDW TS-H542A
    Media ID Code - RITEKG05
    Media Type - DVD-R
    Read Error list
    1. Error - LBA = 001bff30h
    2. Error - LBA = 001bff31h
    3. Error - LBA = 001bff32h
    4. Error - LBA = 001bff33h
    5. Error - LBA = 001bff34h
    6. Error - LBA = 001bff35h
    7. Error - LBA = 001bff36h
    8. Error - LBA = 001bff37h
    9. Error - LBA = 001bff38h
    10. Error - LBA = 001bff39h
    11. Error - LBA = 001bff3ah
    12. Error - LBA = 001bff3bh
    13. Error - LBA = 001bff3ch
    14. Error - LBA = 001bff3dh
    15. Error - LBA = 001bff3eh
    16. Error - LBA = 001bff3fh
    17. Error - LBA = 001bff40h
    18. Error - LBA = 001bff41h
    19. Error - LBA = 001bff42h
    20. Error - LBA = 001bff43h

This one went to over 250 errors, and would've been more had I not stopped it.

I'm interested in knowing if this is a PC problem, burner problem or media problem or a mixture. If you have any info or tips then please help me out, this is really frustrating me.

I've been leaning towards a Pioneer 110 DVDWriter as a replacement, anyone have good alternatives to it or can offer a review?

Post a burn log from Nero and someone will look at it.

You can get good media here:
    http://www.supermediastore.com/

Or locally at Sam's, Best Buy, OfficeMax, Office Depot etc. Good brands would be Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).

As for the new burner, I would hold off til we have a look at your log...but if you really want a new one I would look here:
    http://www.supermediastore.com/

My pick would be the NEC, but Lite-On's and BenQ's are very good as well.

Being that you are in the UK you might want to check out Verbatim, one of our moderators creaky highly recommends these.

this is the first thing that jumps out at me, need to close down your other background progs. to free up more memory and later if your budget will allow it, buy another 256mb or even better a 512mb stick of ram to add to your system... having only 29mb of free memory available is borderline "GONNA CRAWL to a standstill" level~ :)

burning pretty close to the edge there aren't we? consider pulling the target back a little bit, perhaps 4300-4360mb?

i've had good success with RitekG05s, as has afterdawn member "gurnard"; he's in the UK also, he's been turning to Verbatims as of late from svp (i think) or locally and he's been pleased from what he tells me...i believe the Taiyo Yuden made Verbatims are no longer going to be carried by svp...i dunno, i'm in the U.S.~ :)

i never owned a Samsung drive, so i can't tell you from experience whether it likes Ritek media or not...i'm just chipping in from what i see in ur log that catches my eye

    docTy~

I had no other programs running while I was burning, and I never do, so why the free memory was so low is a mystery to me too. I'll hopefully be getting a ram upgrade soon.

The amount of data which was burnt to the DVD is what extracted was from the original .img file. I don't really want to start messing with files inside the video_ts folder incase it interferes with the playback.

I scanned the disc twice with 2 different programs and they both showed no errors at all. I'll watch it tomorrow and make 100% sure and maybe do a few more burns to see if it's working okay, but I'm puzzled as to why nero manages to burn fine but dvd decrypter messes up :/

after the ram update you should do alot better, I only have 512 meg of ram on mine and it works well dvdshrink should be helpful to you as well, it will allow you to compress the file under 4330....
and go with verbatims they do work well..

    OhNoes01 ,
If that is a true .img file( no errors) then use ImgBurn as it will burn the image properly as long as you made the file proper.

When you do the next burn turn off the internet, AntiVirus, Firewall, Screensaver and just let Imgburn do the burn. As the others suggested ram would help but you can do the burn w/ the ram you have if you turn alot of processes off.

You do not need Shrink or anything to burn it. You stated DVDDecrypter failed to do the burn and if Imgburn fails then the file is corrupted. Where did the original file come from as you mentioned extracted from the original

I downloaded the .img file initially, I checked all the rars were fine before extracting.

DVD decrypter successfully burns the image, but for some reason it causes playback errors. nero managed to burn it fine after i extracted all the files inside the .img and put it into the video_ts folder. I'll try imgburn later on today and see if it works.

    OhNoes01,
Slow the burn down and see if that helps. I am glad that you got a copy w/ Nero but it has to be a problem w/ the blank media. I have not used Ritek's in over 1 year as I use only Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Initially when Ritek came out w/ the G05's there was a problem but I thought they removed all of that media. I hope you did not get one of the bad batches. You might even clean the DVD burner's lens as that can give you a problem. If it fails again change blank media

I tried imgburn just now, had the same errors as dvd decrypter :/

also had a look in the performance tab of task manager and found that lots of ram is being used for system cache. is there any way to cut that down?

back again. my machine crashed so I had to format. Now I'm using windows xp pro and the problem is even worse. the device buffer skips in a loop of 78%-82%-98% throughout the burn, and now both buffers will drop to 0%. I can hear the machine going crazy as if it's processing something but there is absolutely nothing else running.

I was using imgburn this time. is it possible this is a hardware problem instead of a media problem?

Instead of Using Nero try using CloneDVD 2 to write your image. This program uses little computer resources so should assist you in your problem. Also, I had a Samsung drive and Riteks are not its preferrred media of choice. I use Verbatim 8X DVD+R discs. I get 100pk from Sams Club for like $28. I burn everything at 4x and have not made a coaster in a few years. As far as getting a new drive, get a Plextor or NEC. I have the trayless Plextor, which cost around $85, but noise is minimal and burns are tremendous. Hope this helps.

Had same problem before, media - memorex 8x, some Sony 16x. Switched to Verbatium and TDK, no coasters! As previous post suggest, close any unneeded programs, virus protect, media players, even download accelerators (don't know why- Getright bogged down my burning 100%), Try programs ( freeware) dvdshrink, and dvdfab for sony encryptions.

as far as I know CloneDVD2 works okay.

I burnt it on a mirror platinum 8x dvd-r MCC 02RG20 (wasn't able the manufactor+code on videohelp) and the scans with VSO Inspector and DVDinfopro came back positive, except for 3 white dots which appeared in the same place on both discs (burnt it twice using different methods).

is that something to worry about?

I then burnt it onto a Ritek disc and to no surprise it came back with a few errors.

I have it re-scanning using my DVD-rom drive now and I'm hoping it reads fine. If that isn't the case am I correct in assuming I got screwed with shit media? I'll watch the mirror disc tomorrow so I can be 100% sure it works and maybe I can switch to those until I'm able to buy some new discs.

edit: just finished scanning with dvd-rom drive...seems like its even worse.
