Ok... got a problem. I'm going to be building a computer for a friend. I got an OEM ATA 100 HDD. I have the ribbon cable picked out(newegg). But I'm not sure if the ribbon cable has the four pin molex I need for power. From the pictures I don't think so. Does a retail motherboard come with the necessary cables? Here's the cable. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16812104112 Here's the HDD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144102 Here's the Mobo. http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813138268 SO, tell me if I need to get an ATA 100 power cable or if it's on the ribbon cable or what? Thanks alot guys.
The power cable will come from the power supply, not the motherboard. The IDE ribbon cable is what connects to the motherboard. Usually ribbon cables come with the motherboard too, at least on the Asus motherboards I normally buy.
Hay mate, i think u may be getting a bit confused a ribbon cable connects the drive to the motherboard. You also need a Power supplie unit like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817709006 this will have to plug into the motherboard the hdd the cd/dvd drive, maybe the video card and the floppy disk drive. This should come with most of the 4 pin molexs u need. So you also a power supply unit as well. A Retail motherboard should come complete with a cable, but to be sure best buy another one. Hope this helps. Regards
Ok thanks guys. I do have the PSU picked out. It comes with the case. Rosewill Red/Black case w/ 350W PSU AMD Sempron 64 2500+ 512MB of generic RAM That mobo with integrated video and that hdd Shouldn't pose a problem. He only wants to do basic home stuff and internet on it. Thanks alot.
