What is this; what difference does it make; how can one tell whether their HDTV has it; and more to the point, does any of the new SCEPTRE (X37 or X42) HDTVs have it?

I don't know anything about Sceptre HDTVs but I do know alot about Qam tuners.

A Qam tuner (AKA Clear-QAM tuner) is used to receive unscrambled Digital Cable channels digitally.

Being able to tune into your HD local channels via "Basic Cable" without a set-top box saves money and space. The only catch is that the channels must be in the "Clear" or unscrambled/un-encrypted. That means if you want HBO-HD then you will still need to subscribe to "HD-Cable" and lease an HD-cable tuner from your cable provider.

It should be some where on the Specs sheet. It will be listed as a QAM, clear-QAM, or 256-QAM tuner.

From the specs on the web site it doesn't look like the Sceptre sets have QAM tuners.
