try it in another computer. if it works there, we'll keep troubleshooting. if not, the drive is bricked and you need a new one.

or you could just back up your hdd (put it on a external hdd if possible)and format your computer/laptop. maybe something had been changed this will sort it out but i warn you, you will loose everything on your computer although youde probably know that already lol.

    its just a thought

Try going to the device manager, find your dvd rom there, and delete or un-install it. Reboot, and the computer should recognize new hardware. Let windows reinstall it for you.
If this doesn't work, it's possible your firmware got corrupted somehow. Go to the site for your dvd rom's manufacturer, and see if there's updated firmware for it. If not, download current firmware, and re-install. If this doesn't work either, it's probably time for a new drive. They are pretty cheap now, so that's good..........
    Good luck!

You don't need a cd for the dvd rom, to do what I suggested.
That is uninstalling and re-installing through windows. Give it a try. Sometimes it fixes the problem. Can't swear it will fix this problem though. It won't hurt anything..........
As for firmware, check here: http://forum.rpc1.org/index.php

If you go to the Device manager, and find your dvd rom there, and delete or uninstall it, the dvd rom is the only thing it will mess with. Reboot, and the computer will detect new hardware. Then let windows reinstall it for you. As long as you select the dvd rom to delete, nothing else will be bothered.

If you have nothing better to do you could always take it apart, blow out with air can, and clean the lens with some glass cleaner or even adjust the voltage to the lens. If it has warranty, get it replaced. If not, just buy a new one you should be able to find one for 40 bucks

Don’t need to do any of that, what you need to do is BUY a new drive. Install, and you’ll see it working effortlessly.
