Correct me if I'm wrong. You have some video that you would like to transfer to your laptop hard drive and then burn this to a DVD.

If this is the case your Laptop will have to be fitted with a video capture card of some type, the images are captured to hd and then you can burn using Nero or some other burning prog.

I feel the same way. It sounds like he's trying to play a DVD-R on his laptop. Salesman told him to stick it in and go to window media "player" maybe. And it's not playing. Maybe he made the DVD-R on the Panasonic mini video recorder??? What's this?

My take is they got a mini disk camcorder and the disk it uses is -R format media that after being recorded should play in the computer. I don't think I explained that any better than the poster.

yes you did. forgot about camcorder.

Edit:I don't know anything about DVD cameras, but I do know that to read a DVD data disc on another pc it has to be closed for all drives to recognize. Since the disc certainly shouldn't be closed until you fill it up, maybe that why he can't retrieve video.
