problems with windows ME

    i have a 4100 Dell Machine with windows millenium edition on it
    it ran fine yesterday until i installed some updates from microsoft now when i turn the computer on it gives me options to chose from and when i try to go into safe mode it boots up but the colors of my background are all messed up and there is not the windows taskbar or any icons on the sreen
    please help!

    Safe mode will create 'messed up' colours as it uses 16 colour mode, making anything photographic look shocking. May I ask what is so bad about having options to choose from that causes you to use safe mode?

    yes i know that but once i do boot in safe mode it doesnt let me do anything it is just the background

    if i reinstall windows ME on the machine will i still have all my data, photos and music etc....?

    Theres your PROMLEM it's Me.Change to XP Pro Corp Edition.Or just wait for Windows Vista to come out.Wont be long now,well for the rest of SA it will.I'll have it a month before anybody else.Got connections.But hey just change ur OS to Xp Pro, NOT Home Ed.

    Well by all means, but that's expensive. Windows Me is, unfortunately the worst of all Windows operating systems, and I applaud you for putting up with it for so long. A reinstall should cure the problem and you shouldn't lose any of your data except my documents. if you try and back that up in a DOS prompt you should be able to keep them.
