Hello my friends I just got a new computer with SATA harddrive. I wanna add my old IDE drive because of all the programs I have on it. The SATA is not connected to the standard connection on the mother but it has a special connetion on the motheboard. I tried to just slave the ole HD and connect it the standard connection on the motherboard. The computer would not boot. I believe the old HD drive had it confused because of the connection. The ole HD is a Seagate and the new computer has 3700 AMd 64 with a 7200 HD. I need to find a way to connect my old drive. This is my first SATA so I don't much about adapters are how to configure them to work I know it can me done. I just wanna slave the old hard drive to the new one. I hope I gave enough info.
set the ide drive to master and put it on its own ide channel. then, enter your bios and select to boot from your sata drive, not your ide drive. if that doesn't work, set the ide drive to slave and keep it on its own ide channel. then go to your bios and set to boot from the sata drive again. one of those two setting should work.
If you only have 2 hdds and 1 cd or dvdrw, then set the old hdd as master in the primary ide then set the cd or dvd drive as master in the secondary ide, and in the bios configure your hdd boot priority , set the sata drive at the highest then the old hdd
thanks creaky, and by the way, why are Imation and TDK bad? I've used both and never had any grief (but avoid CMC wherever possible). SATA drives like to take priority over IDE, so you'll need to make sure everything about the sata is secondary and slave, and everything about the IDE is primary and master. Once you've done that, you should be good to go.
I lost all my desktop files from the IDE drive. Hey I did what you guys suggested and slaved the IDE and booted from the SATA, but all my desk top files are gone all my programs and naked pictures lol. I did a search but they did not come up anywhere. I have some pics that were in other files on the IDE hard drive but not anything from my desk top. What happened? SIGNED BOWL OF TEARS PS. yes I had a pass word and was the admin. on the IDE, but my sons files are there and the guest files are there. They did not have a password is that the problem. When I go to the old IDE drive which is now the G drive, it says my account is empty that ridiculous. I don't know how to retrieve any of it or if its still there. She just crashed on me in the middle of downloadin from the web. I thought it was the power supply I change it and it didn't work so i bought a new computer thinkin i could just transfer my old hard drive. help! help!help!help!
x:/documents and settings/TEMP.oldusername That's where my files went when I reinstalled windows, x being the letter of the drive.
I thought Explorer was my web browser, i don't wanna sound dumb although i may have passed that point already lol. Do i double clik, explorer and what............sorry don't mean to sound so........dumb. Just need help thats all.
you have 2 explorers, 1 is the internet explorer for going on the net & the 2nd is windows explorer that allows you to see files & folders on floppy disk, hd, cd & dvd drives.
Hold down the windows logo key on your keyboard (next to ctrl) and press E. Windows explorer will open. Choose the disk drive letter that your old documents are stored on. Then go to "Documents and settings" then there will be a few folders stored on there pertaining to the various usernames. If there aren't, you're not in administrator mode, so log off use username administrator and the relevant password (blank if you don't have an administrator account). This way you'll be able to access the relevant folder.# SHould you not have a windows key on your keyboard then go to start -> Run, and type x:/documents and settings, where x is the drive letter you're concerned with.
@dickeyjay, Try this-click start > allprograms > accessories > windows explorer, that's all there is to it. Good luck. or you could do it sammorris's way^^^^^^^ I posted a second behind.
I have no X: drive and my old username says it has no files although I have all the program files and other username files that were on the old hard drive. I seems as though my username files were erased on the old IDE drive for some reason maybe that happen in the crash and it deleted my files. I don't know but I can't find anything on the old drive with my desktop files on it are where they are. If they were still on the old drive and I was the admin. where would my old desktop file be?
No, I said x because I don't know what the drive letter of that old drive will be, it could be anything, D,E,F,G.... etc. I chose X as it's generally a letter useed for a variable - something that you don't know what it is. If for example that IDE drive comes up as E, then it would be E:\documents and settings. check all the folders within Documents and settings. If you still don't find anything, search the drive for anything named "desktop". That will find you your desktop folder. I think it'll be very unlikely that just your old personal data will have gone. I just don't think you're looking in the right place.
I am very sorry about that. I think before I said my old IDE drive is now G:\. I tried to look in all the folders. I will do a search on my G:\drive for any folder with desktop. I was the Admin. on the old drive and mine is the only username on the old drive that I can't access and says no contents. It want even allow me to open my old username on the G:\ drive. It was pass word protected but now i can't even get in.
