As the title says, I have a p4 3200 and someone told me i can get that running as a 3600 by over clocking it. Are there any tutorials anywhere for doing this as I have looked and have not stumbled across any. One other thing, does it matter what Mobo you have as when i go into my set up the CPU is greyed out.
It totally matters what mb you have if you want to overclock. Some boards are made with oc in mind, others are not. You will find various parts of the bios greyed out until you enable manual settings. You need to give the make and model of your motherboard and what bios you are running as well. There are various ways to oc a cpu. You can just adjust the fsb on the cpu which will then be multiplied by the internal multiplier. Doing this you then adjust the speed of the memory, in which case you need to see how good your memory is, and if you can then slacken the memory timings. Normal way would be to adjust the multiplier and cpu freq to get the cpu up and the memory as close to the optimal speed it will run at. You will also need to consider increasing cpu/mem voltages, but this again increases heat, so you then need to keep on top of the cooling. Basically supply your hw details and we'll see what you can do with it.
I'm no fool when it comes to pc's but that all just sounds like gobbledy goop to me :-/ my mother board is Asus P4R-800V Deluxe, how do I know what Bios I am running, does that say in the set up?
You should be able to see bios when you boot the pc, or if you can run asus probe on that board, it will tell you there. P.S> the basic part of what i tried to say, was that you can approach overclocking one of two ways. Either straight forward clocking of the fsb to increase the cpu speed, or by mixing various clocks to stable things out across the board.
I have managed to get it running at 3.76 Ghz and has been running ok but if I try to get it past this the pc just doesnt boot up. Do I assume that that would be the maximum I can turn it up to? this was only changing the the CPU frequency setting. i did not mess about with anything else,If i learnt about the other things to change would it enable me to turn it up even more?
Not a bad overclock to start with anyway. The CPU may be at the limit on the cooler, see the temperature is not getting too high. The CPU may well need the voltage upped at any higher speed than you have, but make sure you don't go over stated max and watch temp as this will be raised by voltage increases. The memory could well be the problem as this will be overclocked as well, you need to calculate the freq it is running at, maybe for a start try to slacken the timings on the memory, as those stated will be for the stated freq not the overclocked freq. You need to see what the max freq your memory will run at and if the MB is supplying enough voltage to that as well, see what it will run on safely.
