extracting video/audio from single mpeg2 file

I am new to this, and I can't find the answers in other posts. I have an mpeg2 file with both video and audio. As I understand it I can't use this single file to make a dvd?
I have to have separate video/audio. Can anyone help me with the tools needed to extract these files. I've tried Quicktime (only views), Extractor 095 (can't get the video or I think I can but in another format m2v, that I don't understand - audio comes out in mp2 and maybe ac3, but that didn't seem to work) and dabbled with Mediapipe without success.
Ant help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks
