Hey all i was wondering if anyone knows of a decent enough laptop for gaming? Im in a wheelchair and playing a game such as guild wars or world of warcraft will definetly pass the time until a family member gets home from work. Under $2000 or around would be ideal.I would be plugged in all the time so a long battery life doesnt really matter.thanks

Well, you actually don't need much to play Guild Wars and WoW, but I can give some gaming laptop recommendations.

As much as I dislike DELL, they have some great notebooks, especially for gaming at reasonable prices:
    http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_xpsnb_m170?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Check out the cheapest ready for order XPS Notebook. It's $1,799 and it's got pretty good stats. (Feel free to customize your own to exact liking)

Alienware Notebooks, they're famous for their gaming rigs. Though the true gamer notebooks available are going to fetch a pretty penny, cause they're built for the "hardcore."

You can check out any of the Area51 m5700 series, with the m7700 just breaking about $2,000. As you can see the super-rig starts at $2,329

HP: Ah, I like HP for their reasonable prices and classy designs.
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...otebooks/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store
Check out the dv8000t series. You can up the processor to around 2.0 ghz and the RAM to 2GBs and get an awesome laptop for around $1,850.

Gateway: Check out either two of these systems configured to your liking, both are good for gaming.

ABSThese are actually underated notebooks. While not really famous, they do the job.

What it comes down to when looking at notebooks for gaming is this:

Dedicated Video Memory(Graphics Card) of atleast 128MB to 256MB
A good processor (Intel P4/Duo or AMD 64 at around 2.0 Ghz or more)
Decent DDR RAM at 1 Gig or more.
HD with atleast 40 Gigs and RPM of atleast 5400.
A LCD Screen that supports no less then XGA Resolution. (1280x800)

More or less in any of the areas according to your liking.

    Hope that helps!

Yeah, that card should be fine for WoW or Guild Wars. I can run WoW on my 2 year old HP Pavillion 7000 series. And it only has a GeForce 5600 Go with 64 Mbs of VRAM. Though my laptop does have a 3.06 P4 HT CPU that picks up some of the load.

The X1400 isn't one of those monster laptop cards that'll deliver screaming performance, but it'll be more then enough to handle WoW or Guild Wars.

Edit: Just don't expect to run DOOM3 or FEAR exceptionally well on it. The x1400 isn't truly a gaming card they're made for thin and light portable solutions, but you should be able to get by with WoW or GW. They do have most of the bells and whistles like Shader 3.0 support, etc.

Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages.

    First Laptop

[/b]Pros[/b]: This has an awesome AMD 64 4000+ Mobile chip, which is a great gaming CPU, especially for a laptop. It has 1 Gig of RAM and a nice beefy HD.

Cons: HOWEVER, the HD is a little slow at 4200RPM, though it won't REALLY effect gaming performance that much I'd like to see it a little faster. The x600 Graphics card is a decent midrange card, but it's not a gaming card. It should play WoW, and all the modern games out today, but not at high resolution.

Final Thought:Great CPU and beefy RAM might pick up some of the performance you lack in the midrange graphics card.

    Second and Third Laptop

Pros: Well this actually makes it easier for me. If you look closely they're the same model laptop. ;D The Intel Centrino Duo, is GREAT for multitasking cause it has DUAL 1.67ghz cores. The x1400 is one step above the x600 and the HD is 5400 RPM, which is fine for a laptop.

Cons: The Intel Centino Duo is weaker when compared to the AMD 64 4000+ Mobile when it comes to gaming because dual core processors haven't been fully utilized in games yet. The 512 ram is KINDA low for today's games. You'd want atleast a gig, cause in WoW's major cities there's tons of stuff happening all at once, and upgrading the ram can help smooth the framerate out a bit. The x1400, while better the the x600 still isn't a gaming card.

Final Thought: Graphics card and HD are slightly better then the one above, however the processor and RAM bring them back down to equal territory. This is a good multitasking computer.

The main question is this: Do you entirely plan to use this laptop for gaming? And how much do you care about eye candy and performance?

If you're like me, I'm an a-hole when it comes to performance and graphics. I hate the slightest bit of stuttering, and the game BETTER be on the highest settings.

The AMD laptop is probably a better bet for strictly gaming, but that x600 still worries me a bit.

The Centrino Duo notebooks are a better all-around notebook. They're more portable, and can multi-task better. But they lack sheer horsepower when it comes to the CPU, and you'd probably want to upgrade your RAM to 1024 MBs. Plus, while the x1400 is BETTER, I'm not quite sure how much of a visible difference it'd make.

I'm gonna give a quick NOTEBOOK GPU Summary. ATi cards on the left, nVidia on the right. The more powerful the card, the further down the list:

    -Low End-
    X300/6200
    X1300/7300

    -Mid Range(Mainstream)-
    X600/6400
    X1400/7400

    -Performance-
    X700/6600
    X1600/7600

    -High Performance/Desktop Replacement-
    X800/6800
    X800XT/6800 Ultra
    X1800/7800
    X1800XT/7800GTX

If you notice most of the laptops I posted, they either fall into the Performance or High Performance range. This is based purely on gaming performance though. Technically even some of the low end cards can run WoW; it comes down to how well do you want it to run.

Edit: What part of Canada? I have some friends up in Ottawa.

dvd_craze - the problem with that computer is it only has 512 mb ram, my laptop below cost me £900, and does the trick for me, heat is the biggest issue tho.

With any laptop that can game, so pretty much any dedicated GPU above the norm and any high speed CPU, will get very hot and have poor battery life. A friend of mine uses an Alienware Area51-m laptop with a 3Ghz P4 desktop CPU and a GoFX5700. It gets enormously hot (too hot to game on your lap comfortably) and has a battery life of about 40 mins in gaming.
Compare this to the basic laptop I'm using with a 1400mhz Mobile celeron and integrated graphics, it doesn't even warm your legs up much at all. Appreciably It can't game well, but when I am playing games on it the battery lasts at least an hour and a half.
Generally, you will want 1GB of RAM, that's of utmost importance. With CPUs anything above 1700mhz will do, and go for any GPU 128MB or more and X1400 and above type graphics.
