I know this has been discussed and always people says this is due to damaged discs...but here's the deal.

I'm getting this error a lot lately including with boxsets that i have just bought and open and try to make a backup to preserve the original ones. The thing is i have asked a friend to do it for me and he copies them with no problem using dvdshrink.

I have dvd burners DRU500a and the 720 (dual layer) and i use clonedvd2 90% of the times and dvdshrink to try if the other failed. I have anydvd running in the background.

Reading in the forums i saw something about the firmware of the dvdburners so i updated them:

    DRU-720a - JY08
    DRU-500a - 2.1a

Any suggestions to try to improve this situation will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your drive is having trouble reading the disc.
    May be a dirty lens.
Try using a Lens Cleaner Disc and see if that does the trick…

From what you have stated, I agree with 2oldgeek, it's probably the lens. Just get one of those lens cleaners for 5 bucks and see if that works. I had this problem too. The lens cleaner took care of it ;)
