What are you playing the CD in, and what OS are you using?
Operating systems older than Windows XP require a physical link between the drive and the motherboard for CD audio (a small black and red cable).

Also, try using a couple of players like Windows Media Player, Winamp and itunes. If these do play, try updating you're previous software. If they don't, then try another audio cd. If that doesn't play either, then you may need to replace the drive, preferably with a different brand if I had my way (because from a personal perspective I've had bad experiences with Benq).
If it does play other CDs then you may just need to clean that CD.

I like top-quality stuff - to me, that means Plextor (and NOT LG).
I have also had good luck with NEC, Sony OEM (Lite-On), and Pioneer.
These are all $49 bucks. Plextor costs more, they are The Best!
    Regards

The LG GSA-4167 is a superb cheap DVD Writer that'll do absolutely everything. Before you do that though, is the drive actually recognised in windows? I don't mean to sound patronising but it sounds like it may not even be attached properly. If it is, then it'll likely be faulty, at least it isn't doing what my drive did and activate the burning laser when I put a CD-ROM in the drive.

first it was my cd rom that came with the computer, it didnt have anything, than i put a jumper plug or w/e u call those things on the master, and put the new burner on the slave mode, added the ide cable that was with the master one, so from hard drive to, new burner, and on the end to the old cd rom drive, and of course the power plug, i tired another set of ide cables and still nothing changed

set it as slave to the hd as had a somewhat similar problem between a dvd burner as master & cd burner as slave that the cd burner will eventually go offline & take the dvd burner. changed dvd burner to slave with the hd, set cdrom as master that was slave to hd & cd burner still as slave with no drop out yet.
