I bought some memorex 16x dvd-r's and customer service at Go Video told me that the 16x dvd-r's have damaged/shut down some of their dvd recorder's. Has anyone heard anything about this? I have the dvd recorder/vcr combo. I purchased it about a year ago from Go Video, model 3845. I have burned about 3 16x dvd-r's with no problem so far.
At what speeds are you burning those disc's. I would not burn them any faster than 8X. I don't see how that could damage your player ?
They told me to get 4x dvd-r's so I think that is the speed I am burning at. Using 16x dvd-r's on a 4x dvd recorder....could that damage the dvd recorder? I just bought a 100 pack, so I am wondering if I need to get rid of these and buy some 4x dvd-r's.
swt7900, You might consider your next batch of DVD's you buy to try a buy a little better blank media. Try Verbatim, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden. Memorex is in the real low quality bracket. I also agree you should really slow the burn down but w/ those disks I would go slower than 8X. Burning at 4X is OK w/ 16X DVD'S
swt7900, The problem is there is no quality control in the making of their disks and they manuf the disks as quickly as they can. They use the cheapest dyes also
Ouch !!.....didn't realize you were using Memorex media. Yeah use TY, Verbatim, or Maxell. Verbatim & Maxell will be easier to find in retail stores, than TY's.
CMC is the culprit. Memorex buys media from various manufacturers to resell. Over the past couple of years CMC has been the major supplier for Memorex. The CMC is the media that gave Memorex the "black eye". Be careful though, Memorex isn't the only company that sells CMC manufactured media. I hear that even Verbatim sells some of it as their less expensive offering. There appeared to be compatibility issues with the CMC as well as quality. If they're playing and working okay, don't worry, they can't cause any physical damage I'm aware of. The problems manifest as playability errors or recording problems. In such a case, just getting some good media should remedy the problem. 4X is pretty much a thing of the past, so plan on using 8X or the 16X as the market dictates. Finding 4X can still be done, but it's like a scavenger hunt.
swt7900, I'm not sure what are the opinions for Go-Video, but I had bad experience with it. I returned it the first time thinking that it might be a defected dvd recorder. Got the same model and still have the same problem. The problem was that it wouldn't recognize my dvdr (Verbatim). Since it couldn't recognize my dvdr, it would spin my dvdr and it would take about 5 mins. To resolve this issue, I have to unplug my dvdr to restart over again. I do hope it's not the same issue. Unfortunately, I can't recall the model number. Hope you have better luck then me.
