I get a message when I turn on my DVD burner saying it will perform at reduced speed because there is no high speed USB controller attatched to the computer. what is this and how can i upgrade?
Is your burner an external drive? Usually this means that a USB 2.0 device is plugged into a USB 1.1 port, greatly reducing the speed of the external device.
Check in control panel to find if you have usb 1.1 or 2.0. I noticed that if i used an old usb 1.1 cable it would give me the same notice even with 2.0 on the computer. If you do need a usb 2 card they start at about 15 bucks. Cheap and some come with both usb and firewire.
yeah, I definetly have a 1.1. where's a good place to a card and should I just get instructions from dell on opening a PCI slot?
go to newegg.com they are the source for all computer parts they have most everything check with Dell Good Luck
Like dvdsndict said now is the time to jump in and do it yourself. Get out your manual, go online and get help. It's really very easy if you take your time and read up on it a little. Watch out for the static elecrticity.LOL
thanks johnnyd. Static is a good point to make though, when you're opening your case, wear rubbber-soled shoes and ALWAYS touch the metal frame of the case before you start touching internals. That will disperse the static. In short, don't work on your computer on shag carpet in wool socks.
thanks guys.. installed it today and it works fine. need to get a movie to burn to see if it sped up the process at all.
