Please let me know if the following should be capable of burning/ripping dvd as it does not seem to work: hp8850 desktop, 933mhz P3 proc, 384mb ram (yeas its odd) 30gbhd, 230mb hd.
It should be. There's alot that could be wrong though with an older machine, what OS are you running, what program are you trying to use to burn, Are you trying to rip them as iso's to your HD or as AVI's??
Thanks man The machines about three years old. I'm running XP pro, using decrypter, and smart ripper. Then I've tried burning with Nero 2 and also clone dvd. The programs start to run but they are really slow. Nothing seems to work properly. I have a laptop that has all the same software and no probs except is has no space so I have to keep deleting files to keep space available. (the laptop has a 1.6ghz processor) I wondered whether I needed a specific type of graphics/video card however I don't know how to check what I have and I assume it should be ok given the fact that its not that old.
What version of Nero do you use on that pc? To get better results and faster times, I would suggest to make sure you are virus and spyware free (could be running in memory when using pc), defragment your hard drive(s), disable some processes that are not needed when burning/encoding, make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive (around 20+) available, make sure the hard drive and burner are DMA enabled, and make sure your drive's firmware is up to date... I was gonna say DMA is probably your prob. If your drives are running in PIA mode, many DVD's will not burn at all and some will, just SLOW. Listen to thugs.
also defrag your hd. what is your resources sitting at as 384meg might be on the low side if programs running in the background?
Hello all, thx for your help so far. Machine is using DMA mode. (but good try - I've since read a few articles on that issue) I have found something else that you might be able to help with..... the burner manual mentions that it will only run at a max speed of 0.7x in USB1.1 I've tried to search the web to find out whether my machine is running USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 however I'm too dumb it appears. Is there an easy way to check that ?
you are more than likely using usb1. to make certain of which you are using, go into device manager into usb controllers & see if have enhanced usb there or not. if enhanced is mentioned than usb2 is there & if not & no exclamation mark in device manager than using usb1. can install a pci usb2 card into system.
