Here is the trouble a friend of mine has the same dvd drive that I do liteon 1693s. Just recently whenever he backs up a disc if he trys to play it again in his dvd drive it will not recongize it does not matter which media used. But you can play the disc in another computer with the same drive or play it his dvd player. I am stumped here any help is appreciated

    It's a compatability issue.

What brand name/speed rate/and format are those backups?

His drive can't recognize it's own backups.

    Maybe the format?
    Maybe crappy media?
    Maybe burned too fast?
    Maybe burned too slow?

Try opposite format and test out in all the drives that may play them, including yours.

Another option: You can bypass both plus and dash format by booktyping. The lite-on drives have this ability. You'll have to download a special utility. If it is the plus format that gives his Litey that no disc error, then booktype them to dvd-rom. This booktyping fools dvd drives into recognizing backups.Only the plus format can be set to booktype. This booktyping is the best thing to do when you get a no disc error on dvd drives. I swear by it.I've got 4 benqs a booktyping and they blow the dash format backups out of the water on stand alone players/game consoles/and pc drives.

Here' the link for that utility:

Also double check the firmware version on his drive. It may also need a firmware update. Firmware controls the writing strategy of a burner.
