    | INTRODUCTION
    |_______________

WHO I AM AND WHY I'M HERE
    =========================
Hi, my name's DeepBlade, and I'm here to guide you to installing GCoS
version 1.5 on your memory card. I'll try to branch out to as much
relevant detail as I can without boring those who already know the
    trivial stuff.

    TARGET AUDIENCE
    ===============
This tutorial is aimed at both 'newbies' and non-newbies. If you are
having troubles installing GCoS to an Official Nintendo Memory card
and looking for help, here it is. This guide has been written for the
    GCoS forum located at http://forum.gamecubeos.com

    WHAT IS GCoS?
    =============
So, GCoS is a softmod/BIOS replacement for the Nintendo Gamecube. It's
like an all-in-one package that gives you the possibility to do all
Gamecube homebrew related stuff that's out there. Of course, there are
other softmods/bios replacements out there, but GCoS seems to be the
most advanced and it's the one I prefer. GCoS 1.5 is the most recent
stable release as of the day this tutorial was written and it's
constantly being developed, so this guide may be out of date one day.

    MISCELLANEOUS
    =============
Obviously, this is not the 'only' method of booting GCoS, but in my
opinion, it is the simplest, quickest way and most cost-effective way
of getting GCoS installed. I would imagine that this is the setup most
people (who are not necessarily interested into getting involved in
the homebrew scene, but just want to use GCoS) would want.

    IMPORTANT!!
    ===========
With the tools you'll use to install GCoS on an Official Nintendo
Memory Card, you'll be able to boot GCoS (through a non-user friendly
way), but this guide aims to get a very user-friendly setup of GCoS
installed on an Official Nintendo Memory Card. Why is this useful?
Well, for example, if you ever wanted to pass GCoS to a friend, in a
cheap, effective way, you don't want them buying a lot of extra and
expensive things, then this guide is for you.

The setup is purely a softmod, it will get GCoS installed and bootable
on an Official Nintendo Memory Card without opening up your Gamecube.
No need for modchips or soldering.

    | LET'S GET STARTED
    |____________________

    THINGS YOU'LL NEED
    ==================
You can get the following on eBay or by other means:

    (1) A Nintendo Gamecube. If you look underneeth your Gamecube, it
should say either DOL-001 or DOL-101.

    (2) An *official* Nintendo 59 or 251 block Memory Card.
    - it will say DOL-008 or DOL-014 if you look underneath it
    - 1019 block Memory cards (DOL-020) will NOT work

    (3)

    (a) BBA+PSO [Nintendo Broadband Adapter (DOL-015) and
    Sega's Phantasty Star Online 1&2]

    OR

    (b) MDP [Datel's Max Drive Pro]

    - you will not need these afterwards **
    - you'll also need an extra memory card (1st or 3rd party)
if you choose the BBA+PSO method

    (4) Action Replay for Gamecube version 1.06, 1.08 or 1.14

    IMPORTANT!!
    ===========
The model number for Gamecubes made after about May 2004 is DOL-101.
Nintendo did not include the digital video port and the customizable
faceplate feature on those units. What does it mean for installing
GCoS? Well, it means that if you own a DOL101, Action Replay versions
1.06 and 1.08 will NOT boot. I don't know why, and I was very shocked
myself when I tried to boot my Action Replay 1.08 on a DOL101. I've
heard rumors that you could contact CodeJunkies and mail your AR 1.06
or 1.08 in exchange for an AR 1.14. I could be wrong. If you have a
DOL-001, you're in luck, cause any version of Action Replay will work
(and you've got the digital video port for Progressive Scan if you
ever decide to buy component cables for your Gamecube).

If you decide to go with Datel's Max Drive Pro (which I would
recommend over PSO+BBA since PSO+BBA is most likely more expensive),
then make sure you get Max Drive PRO and not EVO (thx to brucedlx) on
    this.

On my starred comments in (3), I said that you will not need these
aftwards. This is because all you would need to boot GCoS is Action
Replay and the Official Nintendo Memory Card that has GCoS installed
in it. So another way to put this is, you can even just borrow (3)
from a friend, and give it back to them once you're done, or you could
own (1) (2) and (3) and get your friend(s) involved with GCoS and all
they would needs is (1) (2) and (4), with the help of your (3), and it
will boot GCoS in a very user-friendly way.

Another thing I think I should mention is that the 3rd party memory
card that comes with Action Replays will NOT work with this guide. You
stricly need an Official Nintendo Memory Card, of 59 blocks (DOL-008)
or 251 blocks (DOL-014). I've heard that there is a way to make GCoS
boot up on the Action Replay Memory Cards, but I didn't have the tools
to try it, and this guide is for getting GCoS installed on those
    memory cards.

    | INSTALLATION PROCESS
    |________________________

You'll first need to download "GCoS15-install.zip", which I've
attached to this thread. To get these files to run, you'll need a way
to run DOL files on your Gamecube, which is what PSO+BBA or Max Drive
Pro is for. The zip contains the install files that you'll need to run
to install GCoS 1.5. Also, for those going for the PSO+BBA method,
    I've included a psul.exe for convenience.

    MAX DRIVE PRO METHOD
    ====================
Step 1: Insert the Computer Software MiniDVD into your PC. It should
autorun and install the software. You may have to reboot after this.

Step 2: Once this is finished, open up the Max Drive Pro Software.
Plug the USB Cable provided into the little hole on top of the
memcard. Don't try to push the metal all the way in because it won't
    go.

Step 3: Now, open the folder contains the files from "GCoS15-
install.zip", and drag the file called "1 format.dol" into the
Gamecube window in your Max Drive Pro program. It will ask if you want
to convert this to a memcard file, choose 'yes'. It will upload the
    file onto your memory card.

Step 4: Once it's done transfering, disconnect the USB cable from the
MaxDrivePro memory card and plug it into Slot A of your Gamecube. Plug
in your Official Nintendo 59 or 251 block memory card into Slot B.

Step 5: Insert the MiniDVD That came with your Max Drive Pro (the one
for the Gamecube, not the one that says PC Software) into your
    Gamecube.

Step 6: Turn on your Gamecube. It will take a while for the program to
load, but only the first time. From there on in it will be quick. Now
you should be at the main screen. Select the "1 format.dol" file and
    press start.

Step 7: This step will erase everything on your Official Nintendo
Memory Card in SLOT B. Press A to format it, as the on-screen
instruction says. Once it says 'done', turn off your Gamecube.

Step 8: Take out the Max Drive Pro disc from the drive, turn on your
Gamecube and go into the GC bios save manager, it should say you need
to format tge card in SLOT B, so format it. Once that's done, turn off
    your Gamecube.

Step 9: Bring your Max Drive Pro memory card back to your computer.
    Repeat Steps 3-6 for "2 install-ARcodes.dol", "3 install-level2.dol"
and "4 install-gcos15.dol" and run the corresponding file you
transfered to the memory card. For these files, once you start them on
your Gamecube, press X to write the file, and press R to select slot
    B.

Step 10: Once you're done with all 4 DOLs, load up Action Replay on
your Gamecube with your Official Nintendo Memory Card in SLOT B. Go to
Start Game, open the lid, close the lid, and GCoS 1.5 should boot up.

PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 1&2 + BROADBAND ADAPTER METHOD
    ===================================================
You will need 2 memory cards for this. One for holding your save
character from PSO, so you can load DOL files. This doesn't need to be
a Nintendo memory card, it can be a 3rd party one. The other one will
need to be an official Nintendo Memory Card, 59 or 251 blocks.

Insert the official Nintendo Memory Card into SLOT B, and insert the
    other one into SLOT A.

Step 1: You need set up your PC and Gamecube (with broadband adapter)
to talk to each other. If you have a router, then connect both the PC
and Gamecube to the router, or you can choose to use a cross-over
ethernet cable connecting your PC straight to your Gamecube's BBA.
Then, on your PC, set your internal IP address to 192.168.1.100,
subnet mask as 255.255.255.0. You can do this in the control panel,
network settings for your network card.

Step 2: Fire up your copy of Phantasy Star Online and head on over the
to options menu. Choose network option, provider option, and then
'yes' to go into the network configuration screen. When you are at the
configuration screen select network setup and choose "manualy set an
IP address". Press the next button and enter 192.168.1.32 for the IP
address, 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask, 192.168.1.100 for the
default gateway, and finally 192.168.1.100 for primary DNS. After
entering in the info press next and save your settings to memory card.

Step 3: Open up a command prompt on your PC: start, run, type in
"cmd.exe" and press enter. Assuming that you extracted all the files
from "GCoS15-install.zip" to "c:\gc", type in "c:", and press enter to
change into the C drive. Then type "cd gc" and press enter to change
into the directory. Next type "psul.exe -s" and press enter. This will
make your PC listen for a connection from your Gamecube.

Step 4: Now on PSO choose the Online Game option at the title screen.
Follow the onscreen directions and create your character. After you
have created your character and saved it to the memory card and the
game asks if you agree to the user terms say yes. The game will begin
to load and you will see a warp hole type screen. At this point the
game is initializing the Gamecube BBA for connection.

Step 5: Back on your computer, you should see that your PC and
Gamecube made a connection. Your PC should have sent data to your
Gamecube, and your character should be saved on your memory card in
    SLOT A.

Step 6: Now, in the command prompt, type the following:

    psul "1 format.dol"

and press enter. Go back to your Gamecube, and start PSO. Again,
choose the Online Game option at the title screen and select the
    character that you created.

Step 7: This time, the game should load a black screen with text. This
step will erase everything on your memory card. Make sure your
Official Nintendo Memory card is inserted into Slot B. Press A to
format it, as the on-screen instruction say. Once it says 'done', turn
    off your Gamecube.

Step 8: Take out the Phantasy Star Online disc from the drive, turn on
your Gamecube and go into the GC bios save manager, it should say you
need to format, so format it. Once that's done, turn off your
    Gamecube.

Step 9: Go back to your computer and repeat Steps 3-6 for "2 install-
    ARcodes.dol", "3 install-level2.dol" and "4 install-gcos15.dol". For
these files, once you start them on your Gamecube through Phantasy
Star Online, press X to write the file, and press R to select slot B.

Step 10: Once you're done with all 4 DOLs, load up Action Replay on
your Gamecube with your Official Nintendo Memory Card in SLOT B. Go to
Start Game, open the lid, close the lid, and GCoS 1.5 should boot up.

    MY THOUGHTS
    ===========
The Gamecube homebrew community scene may not be as large as the XBOX
or PS2 homebrew communities, but we are just as dedicated. This is
just one of many things you can do with your Gamecube. There's also
LED mods, top replacement mods for using full-sized DVDs, storing all
your backups, loading and streaming them from your PC. There's even
NES, SNES, N64, GBA and Genesis emulators. I hope the Gamecube
homebrew community will continue to develop applications even as the
next generation of consoles approach. There's a lot of untapped
    potential in the Nintendo Gamecube.

    THANKS
