I'm looking for a solution to burning xvid and divx formats. Sometimes it works, other times I get a flickering black and white movie. The sounds okay. They look okay when seen in the computer.

uasly if you get black and white its due to PAL/NTSC format problem. Are you converting the AVI files to DVD?

Possibly. I guess I've got to start paying better attention. If it is AVI what do suggest?

Yeah it's an incompatibility issue. Not sure where you are but you're either running PAL on an NTSC set or vice versa. When you convert these to DVD you are going to have to make sure that you are encoding for the right format to display correctly on your TV.
