Heres my problem: Whenever I put a cd into my cd drive it recognizes the cd fine. But when I put a new cd into the drive, it still displays the old cd icon. This stops the computer from performing the autorun function for the new cd. Because of this, i have to right click on the icon and click on the "setup" icon instead. Does anybody know how I can fix this?
It could be the response time...With the drive sending information to your computer but i don't know....I also wonder if it could be your CPU?
Chances are it wont be the CPU, if it was you would be looking at very high utlization and then programs would not run or would take forever, but you say they work fine from the setup icon. The disk is okay, the PC can read it, it is just explorer that does not update correctly. Have you recently added new or updated programs that may be using and hogging the explorer shell? If so, then try to uninstall/rollback the last programs since it started. You could also try running something like enditall2 to close programs down, or using msconfig from run command. Then try DVD-ROM driver updates/re-install and windows system file checks/cleanups.
I actually just reformatted my computer. Do you think that this could mean a problem with the cd/dvd drive or could it be something else?
If it worked before, then chances are theres nothing wrong with it, but it's worth getting the latest drivers for it, and maybe look at what firmware it's running. If there are updates, then there is reason for upgrading. It may also be the way you loaded the software when you rebuilt the system. make sure you always reboot when asked, some people get lazy and carry on loading software, this potentially has problems by causing data in the ram to get overwritten and not stored correctly. Also it's best to avoid any firewall/anti-virus running when loading apps. The best guide I have seen to load and then tweak xp is here: http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html There is a lot of stuff to look at, but is worth the effort, as when loaded correctly the operating system is far more stable and performance can be increased.
