Okay I had a Rosewill RD-162, which is a DVD+-RW. One time while I was ripping a DVD movie, the process failed and then ever since my computer reads the burner as a CD-R, which I know for a fact it isn't. Then I figured I'd just use that one as a slave drive, and get a new DVD drive. So I went with a Philips (sorry I cant find model number), which was again a DVD+-RW. This time, while I was buring onto a blank DVD+R at 8x, it failed and the same thing happened. It shows up as CD-R on my computer. Has this happened to anyone else? Or can someone help me out?
    Thanks in advance.

Hrmmm where do you see the it says CD-R? In the My Computer Window? Both my DVD burners a BenQ 1655 and a LiteOn 1633s shows up as CD Drives and I still burn with them ok, they show up as CD Drives since I've installed them. Can you still or have you tried burning with them? Go to your Device manager and see if there are any errors there...also you should be able to come up with some sort of model number from the hardware tree from Device Manager.

I have had this happen to me on a Lite-On I used to have. It was a long time ago when DVD Xcopy was populer, which it locked up during the burn processes. It wouldnt stop burning or cancel so i had to turn off the computer for the drive to stop running. After that it would read DVD's and burn CD-R's but wouldnt burn DVD's Anymore. I reinstalled windows to make sure I didnt have a virues plus I upgraded the firmware and nothing did work. I had to buy another 1 but it has never happened since. (due to me never using DVDXcopy again)

I've been burning for about two years and originally I burned happily with DVD Cloner - the ripoff that combines DVD Shrink and something else - until two of my drives went from functional to being basically useless and unable to read any disc. I'm stll not sure what happened to the drives and any advice on how to avoid it would be appreciated.

I have a laptop with windows XP pro and the two useless drives were matshita uj-811B.
