hey all, my computer has gotten messed up(its my PSU) andthe fact that its pretty old, im buying a new one. In case you wanna know, my old was 512mb of memory, 855mhz(EWW), pentium 3, geforce2 video cards, 2 hard drvies (including dvd and cd burner), and a sound blaster card. when i was searching the web, i remebered that i could also use a server instead of a computer. but im not exactly sure what the major differneces are between the 2. also, will i be able to tranfer like my harddrive form my old pc to my new one? i jusst need the hardware for a computer. Im looking for 1gb of memory, pentium4 or an AMD atholon x2 series proccessor, more space for hard drive, a new video card(preferably ATI Radeon). Im willing to sped up to $800 total. The server im lloking at currently is a dell one(the dell SC430 priced at $399) : http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_server?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
There's all kinds of different types of servers you could turn the old one into, and if you know anything about Linux, they are really easy to setup as file servers and even use them as internet firewalls. All depends on what you want to do with them. The reason I mentioned Linux, is cuz most of the easier to use distros are free, whereas Windows 2003 can still cost ya about $500 or more. As far as using your older equipment on the new computer, there shouldn't be any issues with that either. But, you might be better off getting a new hard drive for better performance on the new machine.
Dont bother with a server enless you know how to maintain it and set it all up. its just not worth the time and effort. you can get a really nice gaming pc or just pc at tiger direct.com, newegg.com or anywhere else.
