Why why why does my almost ancient visioneer (classified "end of life") scan about 100 times better than the scanner on my HP PSC 1410v

I don't understand. I didn't buy the PSC because I didn't like my scanner, I just wanted the extra room, I like the way it prints, but now I have this big box where my tiny lexmark used to be, and my visioneer.

Oh and I am scanning photos at 300dpi on both. The average size of the image from the visioneer is around 1MB, and the HP averages around 2MB, but the Visioneers is clean smooth and looks like what I scanned even at zoom in, and the HP's is choppy.
