I've got Windows XP and I thought when I plugged in my WD ext 160 HD and Creative Zen MP3 player my CPU would recognize it , but it didn't. How do I check my USB ports manually? thanks

Go to your Mobo's web site or better still the chipset website and download the latest chipset drivers.
Also do as suggested before, apply any hardware updates via MS update site.
As long as you see the devices via explorer, you'll know the hardware is okay.
