Screen (font specifically!) looks filtered, hardware related? What can I change?

Just got my new PC set up, and for a few weeks until I get my 6800GT I'm stuck on a 200 express. After I'd settled in with my hardware, I needed to change my resolution. When I did, the font sort..changed? It looks like the screen is filtered now, but it's not so bad. The bad part is th font. It really bugs my eyes.

Let's set things I know aside. Same monitor I used on my last PC. The font looked fine at 800 x 600, but when I changed it to 1280 x 1024, the "filtered" effect jumped in. When I change it back, it looks fine.

I made sure it wasn't ClearType, as that blurriness bugs my eyes.
I just don't know enough to tinker here. Is it something related to "DPI"? I don't know how I should adjust it to have it look right. My last PC pulled it off fine with this monitor at 1280 x1024 with a Geforce 2, so I assume it has something to do with this 200 express? I just don't know what I should do to get it to look right.

Apologies if this isn't in the correct forum, I figured it fit in enough.

    Thanks.
