Thanks "ihoe" I took your advice from a previous post and here is what i got. Maybe you or someone else can interpret. My drive is still slow but I do keep getting "invalid track info" when trying to burn using nero and dvd shrink. It seems to burn one or two and then no more.
When I check the firmware it is mrec which seems to be the latest.
when I check the Dma here is what i get.
primary ide channel (there are two)
    device 0-auto detection
    transfer mode dma if available
    current transfer mode not applicable
    device 1
same except the current transfer mode is ultra dma mode 2

    secondary ide channel
same as above but not applicable is in the current transfer mode for both o and 1

Here is the log I get when I get the error message and failure to burn

    Windows XP 5.1

Your DMA is on, so that is not the problem.

You have Roxio installed on your computer, it's drivers and Nero do not like each other and will cause you to have probems. I suggest you remove Roxio and use the roxio zapper found here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

You may want to try burning at 4x, slower is not always better. Most of the Senior Members around here seem to think that burning at 4x gives optimum results.

Everything else looks pretty good - good media (Taiyo Yuden), good burner (BenQ), and the latest bug free version of Nero 6 (6.6.0.18)Try again after you uninstall Roxio and post the results.

OUCH---I love my roxio and use it for a lot of things. Is there any other way around this problem. What does the roxio zapper do?
    thanks doug

Roxio Zapper will remove everything Roxio from your puter including the bits found in your registry...see my reply in your other thread on the perils of using Roxio. Nero should be able to do anything that Roxio can do and is much less finicky.

Make sure to keep your serial key in a safe place before you delete it in case you have a need for it in the future.

I used to use Roxio all the time and found it to be less worthy than keeping Nero! I'll take Nero over Roxio anytime! Delete it, you won't be sorry for doing it!
