Hey guys. My dad had a Gateway PC. Its from 2001. About a week ago, he tells me that the D drive(CdR drive) just disappeared. I go over to his house to check. He's right, it doesnt even show up when I pull up My computer. I put a cd in, and try to play it, and nothing happens. I try to import the cd into itunes, nothing happens. Any ideas on what the problem is? Hopefully the entire cd drive isnt broken. If you need more info, i can get it.

open the case. check and make sure the IDE cable is still plugged in correctly. If the tray opens power is not the problem. Unplug the IDE cable, and plug it back in. If that doesn't help, try using a different IDE cable.
You could also try the ADD hardware section in the control panel. Who knows maybe it got "deleted."
Check the device manager. If the drive is there, then it must have somehow been disabled. Right click to enable.
There's so many different things that it could be, it's really just process or elimination. The worst thing it could be would be a bad MOBO. If it's a faulty drive, no big deal. New DVD-ROM's are only like 15-20 bucks anyway.
