I screwed my pc up. There are currently 88 processes running right now (just restarted) and more than half of them are over 1,000kb in useage. I am running xp tablet edition so the 88 processes are normal for me but I've never seen so many of them using over 1,000kb. Running virus scan and spybot. Grrr.
If I were you I'd download winpatrol and google every file name you come across and you can decide for yourself whether they are malicious, neccessary or important to keep your system stable. As far as I know 30-60 processes is most common.
Ok, help me out here. Even a full blown tower doesn't run 88 services after a fresh startup. Most of us may hit 30, but that's with theme/sound/AV software..etc. What is it about Tablet Edition that requires that many services? Shown us a screen shot of your services.
It does seem excessive having 88. On a new boot I get 49 processes, but I have a stack of programs running.
All of the Tablet forums that I am active on say that Tablet edition has a ton of processes. When I created this thread, it was kind of a fluke that so much of my memory was taken up. I had clicked a bad link and thought that my computer got another STD. Notice in these screenshots that even though there are 90 processes running, only like 2% of the memory is being used. Pretty cool.
To me it looks like you've got alot of malicious programs running in the background, here download Winpatrol as this will help you in identifying some of the files, I can't help you now as I'v got a First aid course that I need to set off for, but will when I get back. http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html PS a good practise would be to print off your screenshots and google each and every name that winpatrol gives to you in the active tasks part including the .exe file extension and highlighting all the necessary and ones you want to keep in one colour and all the non neccessry files leave blank so you can highlight them in a different colour once deleted.
Yeah I've been googling them for a couple of months now and haven't found anything bad. Some arent critical for the operation of my machine but I just haven't felt like disabling them.
Yeah your right I'v googled a couple of the suspicious ones and they usually turn out to be non malicious but non essential either aslong as your system runs fine with all them processes running then your probably safe (I tend to worry more when you have around 40 processes running and system is running at 100%). PS I like your tracing program incase of it getting stolen, me thinks I'll get one.
Here is something that tells you all about the "Services" (under Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services). It might not have all of them (the site covers XP Pro and Home) but, it SHOULD have a majority of them. If you click on the file name it will tell you what it does and the authors recommendation for the process (Automatic, Manual or Disabled). http://web.archive.org/web/20041124011524/www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm The link uses the "Way Back" web archive because BV's site is no longer up for some reason. Using this guide I got my process down to only 17 processes (Using XP Pro SP2) normally and 13 process when I play games. I would recommend getting something such as Kaspersky Antivirus instead of Norton (CCAPP.EXE, CCSETMGR.EXE, CCEVTMGR.EXE). I would think (although I am not sure as I don't own Tablet Edition) that you could get your processes down to 10~20, while still remaining functional.
