Another newbie question. Somewhere along the line, I misread something (in my owner's manual) and thought my stand alone DVD player had to have -R. I got my manual out and looked again. It says to use +R. So - my question is, can using the -R then be the culprit of the freezing and pixilation? (I hope that's all it is, easy to correct for future back ups). Thanks in advance for any help. Here's more info if this helps: I'm using Verbatim -R 16x -- burning at 4x Gateway Computer model GT 4015E (bought 02-2006) DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.7.2 VobBlanker 2.1.0.0 DVD Shrink 3.2 DVD burner: Toshiba Samsung TS-H552B (installed 03-2006) Toshiba stand alone DVD player SD-K74OSU (09-2004)
Go with the owner's manual, Use the +R and booktype the disk to DVD-ROM. should play fine. Verbatim seem to burn great at 8 or 12X.
Thank you blivetNC for your help, I appreciate your time! I apologize - but I don't know what booktyping is. I did a search before posting this and admit to being more confused than ever. I've been following various guides to copy the DVDs (Scuba Pete's, Alkohol, bbmayo) and I don't recall seeing instructions on booktyping? Any help or even pointing me to an existing thread is very much appreciated. Thank you! (Nero came installed, but I haven't used it yet. I forgot to list that above, I don't know if that would help with this? I really AM a newbie.)
You're using dash,but the stand alone player specs call for plus? That toshiba player is recognizing your dash backups,therefore it will play the dash format.You just have simple playback issues which can easility be fixed. Does that toshiba player have a lot of wear and tear on it? What's the firmware version on that samsung drive? Try 8x and see how that toshiba reacts to it. Keep track of where those freezing issues occur on that toshiba. Then play that same backup on your pc using the samsung dvd-rw drive. See how it handles that same area during playback. Another possibility: Try another burn engine. You have nero,just set it to autoburn after encoding with dvd shrink: Shrink/edit/preferences/File-I/O: Make sure box is ticked for enable burn with nero. Now when you click the backup tab for dvd shrink,Select backup target: You want your burner listed there,as well as a check mark for burn with nero. OK and you should be set. That toshiba may not like: The speed it was burned Burn engine-and they all do vary a little. Maybe a dirty laser lens-if it has a ton of use in the past. Harddrive was fragmented during the backup. Maybe you multi-tasked during that backup? Paper/sticker labels. And a ton of other possibilities. You just need to verify those problematic backups using the drive that produced them.See how they look on that samsung drive.
Thank you creaky for the link. I will read it all again because it looks like this is more about the differences in -R and +R, I appreciate your post though and will reread it the thread. Thank you saugmon for all your help, I really do appreciate your time. I hope you don't mind my copying your post here and replying this way: .... You're using dash,but the stand alone player specs call for plus? * Yes, in reading the owner's manual (again), I see now it calls for plus. That toshiba player is recognizing your dash backups,therefore it will play the dash format.You just have simple playback issues which can easility be fixed. Does that toshiba player have a lot of wear and tear on it? * No, I would say it's played approximately 40-50 DVDs, that's all. What's the firmware version on that samsung drive? * I don't know what firmware is or how to find this out - but I am willing to learn! Try 8x and see how that toshiba reacts to it. * I've burned at 8X in the past (13 discs) and the Toshiba will not even read them. Keep track of where those freezing issues occur on that toshiba. Then play that same backup on your pc using the samsung DVD-RW drive. See how it handles that same area during playback. * The Toshiba freezes up (generally) around the 9-15 minute mark. I took 2 of the DVDs that froze and played them in the DVD-RW drive and they played beautifully - no freezing. I fast forwarded to the same spot and they played fine. * I just did this with one of the movies that was freezing. I don't have time right now to watch it in its entirety - but I put it in the Toshiba and FFwd'd to the spot where it froze on the first disc and it played beauitufully - no freezing! I will try to watch it in its entirety today or tomorrow and post back. That toshiba may not like: The speed it was burned Burn engine-and they all do vary a little. Maybe a dirty laser lens-if it has a ton of use in the past. * I cleaned the Toshiba (for the first time) last night with a new kit and it still froze. Harddrive was fragmented during the backup. Maybe you multi-tasked during that backup? * I some times do multi-task during decryption (is that okay? I thought I read on Scuba Pete's guide it was okay only during decryption though). After decryption though, I disconnect from the internet, disable screen saver and walk away. Paper/sticker labels. * I learned here not to use these. And a ton of other possibilities. You just need to verify those problematic backups using the drive that produced them.See how they look on that samsung drive. .... THank you again saugmon for all your help. I will post back after watching the entire movie. For now, I will hold off buying +R, as I just opened a new Verbatim -R and have 50 of those - hopefully I can use them successfully.
Dvd-r can cause freezing. If you have a newer model computer Use the +r's it should automaticlly change the booktype from dvd+r to dvd-rom. You can't change the booktype on dvd-r. When you buy a dvd in the store the booktype is dvd-rom
THank you veeman51 ~ I want to buy some more DVDs, so I'll try the +R and see how they work. Along with saugmon's advice - hopefully I'll be good to go. My computer is Gateway, model GT 4015E (we just bought it in Feb. at Costco, if that helps).
The samsung drive plays them perfect? It should.Something else is wrong-which is usually the case when using quality media. That backup is ok,and the samsung burner verified it with a perfect playback. Next comes stand alone players. They do have harder times reading backups. If it was a format issue,then you would have gotten some sort of: No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong format/Or wrong region error. See if you can play that disc in some other stand alone players of friends or family members and see how their players react to them,mainly in the area that they freeze. Try that new batch of verbatim,you may have gotten a hold of some bad ones,which can happen to any brand of media. You ran a disc cleaner and same issues. I consider those lens cleaning discs as a last resort,before stand alone player replacement. Since you still have issues after the cleaning,something else is wrong.Your toshiba is sensitive to something about your backup. Mult-tasking can cause playback issues. Programs like Dvd shrink and Nerorecode2 can max out your processor during the analyzing and encoding phases. Firmware may have to be update. Firmware is the programming for your burner. I controls the writing strategy,so it tells your drive how to burn your media.There may be a newer update for it to fix past issues. Try this free program to find the FW version of your drive: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm Nero infotool will also tell you. Post back the results.
http://www.samsung.com/support/prod...ode=1404&model=TS-H552B&filetype=FM&language= Firmware versions for the TS-H552B run TS00 through TS10. I suspect TS10 to be the latest. Be careful flashing drives, interruptions kill. Be extremely careful with hacked software that doesn't come from Samsung support.
Hi saugmon ~ Yes, the samsung drive played right through the spots where my toshiba froze (also pixelated a little bit). I did not play the entire movie however on the samsung. I only played the first 16 minutes where the copied disc gave me all its problems. See if you can play that disc in some other stand alone players of friends or family members and see how their players react to them,mainly in the area that they freeze. * I think we're going to go ahead and buy a new DVD player. We've been wanting to get another player for our 5th wheel, this seems like a good time. Try that new batch of verbatim,you may have gotten a hold of some bad ones,which can happen to any brand of media. * Do you think then I should go ahead and buy the +R Verbatims? (It's worth a shot, right? - I'm pretty clueless..) Mult-tasking can cause playback issues. Programs like DVD Shrink and Nerorecode2 can max out your processor during the analyzing and encoding phases. * I do sometimes multi-tast during the DVD Decryption -- I thought that was alright? I do not multi-task after the decription is done and I set up Shrink. ... Firmware may have to be update. Firmware is the programming for your burner. I controls the writing strategy,so it tells your drive how to burn your media.There may be a newer update for it to fix past issues. Try this free program to find the FW version of your drive: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_... Nero infotool will also tell you. Post back the results. * Okay, I went to the site that brobear posted the link to - and I feel this is something that is beyond my capabilities (the flashing). I'm unsure of what 'results' you asked me to post(?). I downloaded the free program you suggested, but to be honest, I don't know what any of it means. Do you want me to post any of it from the DVD Identifier? Again - thank you for your help!
Actually flashing is easy. Download and follow the instructions. Don't have anything else running when you update the firmware. Don't do it if you fear a power outage. Stopping or interfering is where a problem arises. Once you start the execution, it usually takes only a minute or so for the flash to be done. So, it's download, open, and run. Not much to it. If you can't do it, find someone who can or go to the bookstore and get a book on PCs. Sounds like a course in basics would give you a jump start. As for DVD Identifier, you download it, install it, put one of the DVDs you're using in the burner drive, run the DVD Identifier program, copy and post the info page here. On multitasking, if you get errors, don't do it. If error free you can try it. If the errors come back, you know that multi tasking shouldn't be done. A lot depends on system resources (i.e. RAM and CPU capacity). Do you have a big, fast PC or an economy model? I browsed around the Gateway site and couldn't find that model listed. Can you supply a link to the PC you have from the Gateway selection? For Desktops: http://www.gateway.com/home/product...board*desktops*products/hm_dtp_catalog~~shtml For Notebooks (Laptops): http://www.gateway.com/home/products/hm_ptb_catalog.shtml?clv=LNav
@brobear ~ I apologize for taking so long to reply, it was a long day. Thank you for your clarification of flashing, I feel better now about doing it now if I should. Will definitely ask my husband to sit in on that session however I did go to the Firmware link you provided in your post above, but I honestly don't know what it all means, if there is an update or if my burner is up to date. I will have to learn more about that part first. Is there a "dummy's guide" that starts from square one perhaps? I don't expect everyone to do this work for me, I am happy to search and read, but honestly sometimes (okay, most times) I'm not sure what to search "for". Alright - I hope I'm copying what is needed from the DVD Identifier. This is for a Verbatim-R that I copied yesterday. This is on the "status" tab: [22:00:03] DVD Identifier V4.3.0 [22:00:03] Initializing Drive Interface [Auto-Select ASPI/SPTI] [22:00:03] SPTI Drive Interface Successfully Initialized [22:00:03] 1 Supported Drive Found (Out Of 2 Available Drives) [22:00:03] Manufacturer Database [18-FEB-06@660$88] Loaded From File : (@660$88) Entries Found [22:00:04] This Version Of 'DVD Identifier' Is Up-To-Date [22:00:04] The Manufacturer Database Is Up-To-Date [22:00:18] Waiting For Drive To Initialize Disc... Advice well taken - I will stop multi-tasking during decryption. .. Here is the link to Gateway and my computer: http://support.gateway.com/support/srt/docs.asp?sn=XCM6171001909 .. I picked up a spindle of Verbatim +R today and hopefully can get a backup copy made and watch it tomorrow. If the +R freezes, I will run to Walmart and buy a new DVD player and/or check for firmware updates. Again ~ thank you for your kind replies.
From DVD Identifier, the ID info is the part in the upper display box. When you put the disc in the drive and click Identify, it identifies the DVD manufacturer code on the DVD. Make sure the drive is the one selected in the software if using multiple drives. I used my HP 740i(B) and I have Taiyo Yuden media. Hopefully media or a firmware update handles your problem. Before buying any new equipment, I'd check to see if the same problem occurs with other players. Try a friend of family members player. Are you experiencing the same problem when you play it back on both the PC and the standalone player? Do you have any software that will identify the firmware version of your drive? Believe it or not, under the "For Dummies" titles, I've had a few PC books in the past. Those texts simplify things for beginners. Even those with experience can't remember everything. You might want to visit the bookstore and check out some books. As you know, we're always willing to help as we can here at AD.
I hate to even say this, but I don't know how to copy a screen shot. I just googled it and learned how to copy it into paint, but that's as far as I got. I went ahead and copied a movie onto one of the new Verbatim +R and my Toshiba DVD player will not even read it. I burned it with Nero at 4X. That's as far as I've gotten - time to call it a night. I think I may dream about carefully positioning the Toshiba behind the rear wheel of husband's F350...
Before we get drastic, lets do a check or 2. First of all, the needed info from DVD Identifier is just the manufacturer info. Verbs are usually good, but let us know what you have anyway. Unique Disc Identifier and the Manufacturer Name are sufficient, adding if it's 8X +R or whatever saves some time. It's easier to type that info than go through a screen capture. I only do screen captures because I have software that makes it easy. Since you have Nero, lets use that to find your firmware version. Open the toolkit in Nero Open infotool Select the Drive tab Make sure the burner is selectied in the box at the top. The firmware info is on the top right (circled in the image below). What is your firmware version?
@veeman51...dvd-r do not cause freezing...where on earth did you get that from? 99% of my back-ups are on dvd-r and none of them freeze. @DebB..i think your problem lies in your choice of burning program...try another program..i had that problem when i first started out..the back-ups would play fine on my player but on my friend's player it would pause & stop at times.Changed the entire program i used to do the movie with...problem solved.So try that and see how it goes.
I can do that! Here's the info from DVD Identifier (on the Verbatim -R): Unique Disc Identifier: [DVD-R:MCC 03RG20 ] Manufacturer Name: [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.] Then you posted, "adding if it's 8X +R or whatever saves some time." My disc identification doesn't list as much information as yours does. It lists only 4 items: Disc & Book Type: Manufacturer Name: Manufacturer ID: Blank Disc Capacity: (However, when I identify one of the new Verbatim +R, then I get all the info as you show above). .. The Nero information you asked for: GAO4 I know I sound like a broken record, but thank you so much for your help.. Oh - I went to Walmart yesterday to get their 'cheapy' DVD player and they were out of them. A neighboring store has some in stock, but I guess I was hoping I'd try the new Verbatim +R and they would magically work (which they didn't)
@DebB - time for my proverbial copy/paste methinks..... - if it's Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar. either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
@movies27 ~ I'm sorry - I didn't see your post earlier. Thank you for your input. That is what I'm trying. I have always used DVD Decrypter to (decrypt and) burn. Now I'm trying out Nero. Nero sure seems to be a lot faster and I hope it will solve the problem. @creaky ~ Okay, here is what I copied. There are more of these files, I wasn't sure how many you wanted me to copy, so I copied the very first one: ====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ====== Owner *I removed #* Windows XP 5.1 * I removed # * WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004 9:35:32 AM Nero Version: 6.6.0.15 Internal Version: 6, 6, 0, 15e (Nero Express) Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B>Version: GA04 - HA 3 TA 0 - 6.6.0.15 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 3 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B>Version: 0G08 - HA 3 TA 1 - 6.6.0.15 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 3 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2000BB-00GUC0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B atapi Port 3 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B atapi Port 3 ID 1 DMA: On === CDRom-Device-Map === TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B E: CDRom0 HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B F: CDRom1 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 83886080 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 894MB (915944kB) Free physical memory: 591MB (605584kB) Memory in use : 33 Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 30.3.2006 ===== Disc-Copy over image - 1st step : Copy to image ... 9:35:41 PM #1 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 9:35:41 PM #2 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer Image Recorder running 9:35:41 PM #3 Text 0 File DVDCopy.cpp, Line 279 DVD Track-Information from source disc S01 T01 Con 0x14 Start 0 Len 2232556 (gap 0) Blank 0 Res 0 Dmg 0 Open Trk 0 Mode TRM_DATA_MODE1 (0) 9:35:41 PM #4 Text 0 File DVDCopy.cpp, Line 382 Max -1 tracks of 1 allowed to copy 1: 0 - 2232556 = 2232556, TRM_DATA_MODE1, block size 2048, read opt 0 (no read options) 9:35:41 PM #5 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3231 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 9:35:41 PM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 267 Last possible write address on media: 4718591 (1048:34.41, 9215MB) Last address to be written: 2232555 (496:07.30, 4360MB) 9:35:41 PM #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 279 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 9:35:41 PM #8 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2457 Recorder: Image Recorder; CD type reading failed ATIP Data: ? 9:35:41 PM #9 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 445 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= 9:35:41 PM #10 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 830 Setup items (after recorder preparation) 0: TRM_DATA_MODE1 (1 - Data (mode 1)) 2 indices, index0 (150) not provided original disc pos #0 + 2232556 (2232556) = #2232556/496:7.31 not relocatable, disc pos for caching/writing not required/not required, no patch infos -> TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048, config 0, wanted index0 0 blocks, length 2232556 blocks [Image Recorder] -------------------------------------------------------------- 9:35:41 PM #11 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1043 Prepare recorder [Image Recorder] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x40; Session Closed, disc fixated Tracks 1 to 1: 1: TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048/0x00, FilePos 0 0 4572274688, ISRC "" DAO layout: =========== __Start_|____Track_|_Idx_|_CtrlAdr_|_RecDep__________ 0 | lead-in | 0 | 0x41 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 0 | 0x41 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 1 | 0x41 | 0x00 2232556 | lead-out | 1 | 0x41 | 0x00 9:35:41 PM #12 Phase 120 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 Creating the image for burning 9:35:41 PM #13 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 2643 Verifying disc position of item 0 (not relocatable, no disc pos, no patch infos, orig at #0): write at #0 9:48:28 PM #14 Text 0 File WriterStatus.cpp, Line 116 < Image Recorder > start writing Lead-Out at LBA 2232556 (2210ECh), lenght 0 blocks 9:48:29 PM #15 Text 0 File ThreadedTransfer.cpp, Line 228 all writers idle, stopping conversion 9:48:29 PM #16 Phase 121 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 Creating Image completed successfully ===== Disc-Copy over image - 2nd step : Burn the image ... 9:48:34 PM #1 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 9:48:34 PM #2 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B running 9:48:34 PM #3 IMAGEGEN -10 File ImageGen.cpp, Line 366 Image was written as DAO.
