I have about 70 processes running in my XP Windows Task Manager and my CPU usage is 60-80%...is this the reason I am getting slower every time I back up my movies...went from 20 minutes to 2 hours in the past month. No viruses or spyware. How do I know what processes I need and ones I can delete? I thought restarting my computer would only keep the ones I needed to operate my computer, but it is still the same amount--is this a normal # to have running?

www.processlibrary.com and other websites will tell you what each of the processes are by entering them into their search engine.

You can stop processes from loading by running msconfig in Start/Run, and clicking on the startup tab.

Spybot search and destroy also has a nice tool for stopping processes from running and tells you what they are and if they're needed. some not all though.

thanks for the help...i think i found my culprit. My spamkiller was using a ton of CPU's so I disabled it while I back up stuff and it speeds it up. Thanks
