DVD+R for me hands down. I'll take any DVD+R over any DVD-R any day and any time.

I asked this question in my local electronics store the other day, and 2 of the salespeople were explaining to me that the DVD-R's are beginning to become phased out, to be replaced by the DVD+R's, and that eventually the DVD players will only support DVD+R's and NOT the DVD-R's, for movie backups.

I had a feeling they were wrong about this...

Probably were. There's formats being added, so far none removed. What's coming next is Blu Ray and HDDVD. Due to cost effectiveness, the DVD5 Rs (+R and -R) have remained popular, though we have the higher capacity DLs that don't require compressing files to do a backup of a factory movie DVD. +R and +R DL have the advantage of booktyping.

Anyone ever compared the QUALITY of the copied movie between DVD+r and DVD-R. The shop told me + is better for movies....but -r is more compatible with most stand-alone players

I think they need to go back to school. I like +R but that's a preference, not something that is a matter of quality. There have been studies, but usually there is some bias, someone trying to prove something to improve sales. The only advantage to +R is it can be booktyped to DVD ROM to make them usniversally compatible with standalone players. But, most standalones now play at least +R and -R besides DVD ROM. The first players only played ROM, then came -R and then another group developed +R. The span between -R and +R wasn't very long. So, there wasn't a lot of ROM and -R only players. Of course there are still all kinds of variations. A person needs to know what their player supports when using media. As I mentioned as far as compatibility, the +R and +R DL is best when booktyped to DVD ROM. Without booktyping, +R and -R are just as compatible if the system supports the format. As for quality, they're both good as long as the manufacturer did a good job, using good materials. Besides booktyping, I've found it easier to consistently find good media in the +R format, so that's why I stick with them. For the longest, one of my favorite manufacturers only produced +R.

The difference is they are just different standards. Every format has a standard. Television signals have different standards NTSC, PAL, SECAM and more. Why so many? Sometimes it because it offers better performance. Most of the time it is just a manufacturer does not what to pay licensing fee to the patent holder so they develop their own standard. More money for them.

The DVD+RW Alliance is the official supporter of +R format.
