Yes, the subject says it all. I made the biggest mistake you could ever make copying movies. I returned the copy I made of a movie to Blockbuster (not the store, the online rentals). I realized this a few hours after the mailman picked it up. I went onto the Blockbuster site and saw that I can report a movie as having accidentially returned a personal movie but I don't know how Blockbuster is not going to know its a copy since I had also written with a sharpie the name of the movie on the disk.
So.... all that said.... Should I wait for the FBI to come get me or does anyone think I have a chance of not getting arrested / fined / sued? Any first hand knowledge of what I should expect would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Chris the Idiot

holy crap.....i feel so bad for you. I would try to get it back via "returned personal movie" what else do you have to lose. If not, just take a long vacation out of the country. Ouch.
Post back, if they havent taken your computer and thrown you in jail.

E-mail them saying thats what you received from them. Someone in the postal service could have made the switch LOL. They can't make anything stick when dealing with mail service and so many people handling the dvd. Just my opinion.

Sorry ckurt25 but your story gave me a laugh :)
I have no idea what they will do but I would think they have bigger fish to fry but who knows?
I like Jerry's idea too. Report it that way.

man dont take this as offensive but go kill yourself buddy
if the fbi comes to ur house then ur mum will kill u if she ain there ur dad will.
if ur parents don't know then the fbi will kill u.
if fbi doesn;t kill you then blockbuster will.
if you run youll get killed
if you hide u will get kill (only if you can't hide)
you can try to get the copy back but i think they will check if its the right disc first and oh yeah you could try to make a new world under the sea with no laws
oh wait just buy the damn video and if the fbi comes over to your hous you can show them as it is a back up, but you will hAVE TO FLUSh all your other burned dvds 2

Despite the first part of that last post there is some good advice in there. IF the proverbial shit does hit the fan then you could go out and buy the disc then scratch the shit out of it then say that you rented it to copy cuz yours was all messed up.

Oh you don't even have to scratch up your original. You're allowed a backup of it and I'm sure it's not illegal to rent a movie you already own.

Got this email from Blockbuster today -
The item received by BLOCKBUSTER Online® on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, is not one of the movies we sent you. We will return this item to you as soon as possible.
If you intended to return Hostel [Unrated] [WS] WSE/COLOR 1 of 1 or Brothers Grimm COLOR 1 of null, simply remove the incorrect item from our postage paid envelope and replace it with the DVD you intended to return. Then, as always, seal the return envelope and send it back to us.
Wow... It looks like they are sending my copy back and "its all good."

Well they returned the copy I made and at the same time sent me another movie I had coming. I retured their copy and the other movie the next day and they turned around and sent me two more right away. Looks like I lucked out.

They have probably sent your name and info to MPAA, no worry's right?!?
I've heard that Netfilx and B.B.Online have a system in place that flags people who rent heavily (get a disk, return it the next day and so one...)
Hopefully your patterns are not being watched...

i think netflix does log the amount of dvds you get and send back.
I used to get 3 a month, and i used to return them the next day. Then, after a few weeks of this, the movies took longer to come in than before. I "think" they automaticly create a maximum number of dvds sent to you.
I just recently switched to 1 a month, and i get them back much faster than i did before.

Yes they do have a program in place for that very reason. It was in the Seattle Times

Afriend of mine received a burned DVD from Netflix in the mail, so maybe they don't check them out too well and will not know it was you. You can always say that was the way you got it.

@arniebear
That is too funny! I can't believe Netflix did that. They must not pay attention to the discs themselves but to how many rentals you get in a month.
