compaq prsario 5000

    i have a compaq 5000 that is close to the way i want it but i would like to speed it up some i have 512 mb of ram windows 98 second editio i am going to update to xp when i get the time and money the area that i am thinking of is the cpu or mother board if their not to expensive right now it has a Celeron with 667MHz what are my options and what are the costs? and questions i will try to anser my best if u have any. your help is appecated.

    i would recommend upgrading the processor that seems kind of slow for today but that would be a little expensive.....other than that upgrade the ram and then get xp....what size HD do you have??

    have a 20g and a 15g hard drive and thats fine for me but what kind of cpu should i look for?

    if your motherboard can take a P4 i would recommend that.....

    how can i tell what my mother can take? and what is a p4? im not upto date with the right names i just know what i have. and is their any way to changes sockets for a new cpu? the socket says "pga370".

    i have a spair computer that was parted out that has a better cpu but it has different pins that socket is "socket462" is their any way to put some parts from that parted out computer in to mine and speed it up?

    the compaq uses a p3 cpu which is a socket 370 board. the ram is probably sdram that has 2 notches in the bottom. new p4 & amd boards use ddr ram that has 1 notch in the bottom. socket 478 is a 2nd generation p4 board whereas a socket 775 is 3rd generation p4 board. each # refers to the # of pins on the cpu,ex. socket 370 has 370 pin, socket 478 has 478 pin & so on.

    so what kind of cpu can i get with 370 pins or what can i do? what speed can i go?

    im not sure what one it is the case has 5000 right on the front it came with 64 mb of ram and a 15 gb hard drive with a One PCI slot with modem and a PCI Ethernet Card a cd-burner and another cd-rom and the mobo has not been touched other than the ram. The only information stickers i could find says
    "PRES 5BW130 C/667/U US A80504-003
    Compaq Serial Number R044DTY80415"

    i found out from the compaq tech he said it can be upgraded to a 1133 MHz Intel PIII processor. dose any one have any knolage to agree with this and what is anyones opinion on this cpu how good is it i use my computer for the internet listin and playing music and downloading music usualy miltitasking and the ocasinal game and eventualy the center of a small network on dialup right now but will eventualy will be highspeed internet.

    can try & find 1 maybe on ebay but will probably be hard to find as is discontinued at least 2 years

    well in that case i might as well to buy a new tower and put all my hardware into it.

    that might be better tho can get a whole new tower & guts for a bit more. place i deal with is selling p4 2.1ghz celeron, 256meg ram, 80gig hd, 52x cd burner, onboard sound/lan/vga, agp slot, 8 usb ports, keyboard, optical mouse & speakers but no windows or monitor for $269Can + tax.
