I am trying to install a PCI controller card on my HP Pavilion 7940 (W/ XP) in order to attach additional IDE hard drives, but can't seem to get it fully installed. It detects it during the boot-up process and I can see the additional attached drive (Seagate 250GB). Then I get a "found new hardware wizard" box once in the XP desktop, but it won't fully install the software. No disk came with it so I assume XP has the drivers. The company's website doesn't seem to have XP drivers either, but they state its XP compatible. Any suggestions? Right click on my computer>left click on manage>left click on disk management-Does it show your drive in there? .
nope, the additional drive doesn't show up under disk management. It does however show when you first boot the system up. Just before it goes into loading WinXP, there is a DOS like screen with the addional drive on there. It even says to hit F3 for RAID utility.
If you already have two hard drives connected remove the slave drive and set your new drive to slave in it's place.See if windows recognizes it and lets you do a format,if it does format the drive then put every thing back to the way you have it now. Hopefully after the drive is formatted your problem will be solved.There is probably another way to do this but I can't think of it right now. Try it and good luck!
Actually the extra drive (for the PCI card) was already formatted from being in another system. I tested it again in another computer and it works fine. I have a yellow question mark next to the PCI card in the device manager so I know it's the card that isn't fully installed correctly.
Ok,well I'm running out of ideas here.It sounds like a driver problem for that card,did you try to un-install the drivers and card in device manager,reboot afterwards and let windows install the card again.If this don't work I hate to say I'm at a loss here unless you have a drivers disk. Yea, I tried unistalling and reinstalling it as suggested, but no luck. I even downloaded that driver that you mention, but there only appears to be as high as a Win2000 driver in that zip package. I tried it thinking sometimes the Win2K drivers are the same as WinXP, but no luck. Is there maybe some special way to use that driver for installing this card that I am not aware of? I've e-mailed the manufacturer cause that seems to be the only option now.
That would most likely be the driver that you put onto floppy and insert when installing windows.During insallation it asks "if you have a third party scsi driver insert the disk now" or something similar.Any way I'm not sure how to go about installing that afterwards. I am sure somebody more knowledgable here has the answer and can help.
Well, I got the problem solved. Apparently the drivers on the manufacturer's own webpage are out of date. I e-mailed their customer support address and even they referred me to their own driver page the first time. After a 2nd e-mail stating that they didn't work, they e-mailed me back again with what apparently was an "updated" driver package. Go figure. Oh well. I tried them and WALLLAAA!!!, they worked. All is good and I now have two additional hard drives hooked up and crankin' away. However, even the product manual for this model/device is unavailable on the manufacturer's own support page so I guess I won't be ordering anything else from Cables Unlimited. Maybe I'll try to post these new drivers on driverguide.com in case someone else runs into the same problem. Thanks for all the suggestions.
