I have just bought a Creative Zen Nano, and it is "superb". It does NOT have a memory card slot, though, but my one has 1GB of memory. It is about the size of a Zippo lighter.

My old MP3 player did have a memory card slot, but the music quality was rubbish, so I cannot recommend that.

Sandisk Sansa e100 series players fit your requirements and seem to be getting mostly good reviews. newegg.com has a good deal going right now. Free set of rechargable AAA batteries with the 1Gb player @ $74.

My positive opinion:Very small and light. Good sound. Excellent recording capabilities. Innovative charging/USB cable.
