    An unwanted dialer has appeared that I can't delete and it keeps putting a desktop item up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi moothecow.

    You don't have a firewall on your computer. Download and install one firewall.

    These are good (free) firewalls:
    ZoneAlarm --> http://www.zonelabs.com
    Kerio--> http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
    Outpost-> http://www.agnitum.com

    Ok, you got some infections....

    Cleaning instructions:

    Download and install Ewido, UPDATE it, but do NOT run a scan yet. -> http://www.ewido.net/en/download
    We'll use it later.

    Fix the following entries with HijackThis (run HijackThis, press "Do a system scan only", close all other windows, checkmark entries and press Fix checked):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [links] links.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [funk] funk.exe
    O16 - DPF: {FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC} - http://207.226.177.98/dba1402.exe

    Make your hidden files visible -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html
    Restart your computer to the safemode -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

    Use the Windows "search" function
    -> Start
    -> Search
    -> All files and folders
    -> More advanced options

    Checkmark these options:
    - "Search system folders"
    - "Search hidden files and folders"
    - "Search subfolders"

    ->Search for this and delete if found: links.exe
    ->Search for this and delete if found: funk.exe

    Scan and clean your computer with Ewido and save the log file.

    Restart your computer normally.
    Make your hidden files invisible again

    Post a fresh HijackThis log and Ewido's log to here so we can see if your computer is now clean.

    I have windows firewall on my computer. It may not have shown up as I tried to alter my firewall settings to block the dialer but I have put all those settings back to normal now.
    When I searched for funk.exe and links.exe links wasn't there and it wouldn't let me delete funk.exe but after scanning with ewido I could delete the dialup and couldn't find funk.exe so I hope its gone. Here's my hijack this log

    I recommend that you install a better firewall.

    Your HjT log is looking clean.

    Please post the Ewido report to here.

    You should update your Java: (old version has all kinds of vulnerabilities)

    1. Click Start-> Control panel and double-click Java icon (coffee cup)
    2. Move to Update tab and update Java by clicking "Update Now". After that do a restart.
    3. If you can't make automatic update, get new version manually from here -> http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    4. After restart go back to your Java settings thru control panel (Start->control panel->java).
    5. Select Temporary Internet Files and click Delete Files.
    6. Make sure that all these three are checked:

    Downloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other files

    7. Click ok in Delete Temporary Internet Files window (Attention: This removes all loaded applications and applets from cache)
    8. Click ok to close Java window.
    9. Remove the old Java through Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs if found, it is named like this: Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_01
