This thread is intended to find out why everyone thinks that Firefox is better than Internet Explorer (or any other browsers). Let me start with a few: * Unlike Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox is actively being developed. You rarely see updates released for Internet Explorer. * Mozilla Firefox allows the expansion of the looks and features compared to others. * Tabs - Need I say more? Please list your reasons why Mozilla Firefox is better than the competition.
Ok 1 big one: Most Spyware, virus, pop-ups, ect. are made for Internet Explorer. I used to have to run adaware everyweek or so with IE. Now I do it every couple months and it barely finds anything (a few tracking cookies maybe)
I use various types of web browsers, firefox is my favorite but there are other features with various web browsers that differ from eachother. Just to add IE 7 has tabbed browsing and I must say that i am impressed with IE 7.
I wish I could be impressed with IE7. But, alas I am not. I found it to be nothing but a trivial attempt to mimic the current leaders in those ideas already found in Firefox and Opera. I also noticed that in my testing that transparent png files were now transparent, animated gif files were no longer animated. Thus, it was uninstalled just 30 mins after installation. Why I like Firefox. Well, like Opera...it's fully customizable to "my" tastes. And, when others use it on the system they customize it to "their" tastes. IE has similar settings across the entire browser that everyone has to share, where as Firefox is it's own entity per user. Scripts, extensions, plugins..themes...etc. I like using Firefox's extensions for usability as well as security. And, only the features I want I install. Tweaking Firefox for speed settings across multiple platforms is also very unique, and user friendly. Microsoft just hasn't come into the user friendly environment as much as they think they have. Setting changes are all up front, and contained within the browser itself. Not thru the Control Panel as IE is as well as the browser. MS has "locked" certain features in IE7 to "protect" the browser...well, that has also locked the user out of making customizable changes. IE still maintains the requirement for third party programs to change it's appearance, or registy tweaks for speed increases. In my opinion, the ideas and resources that Opera and Firefox have will continue to out-perform IE in just about all aspects. When website developers learn to be more cross platform friendly, we won't be hearing about how Firefox or Opera didn't render a page like IE. Most people won't give up the ghost of IE no matter how bad it gets, because of the familiarity factor. It's been around for a long time, and it came with their computers...so it's easy to just use it even if a much better browser is available. Besides, there's not much difference in the default UI of Firefox than that of IE. And, it imports all your IE settings including your past history...so transferring over to it is just a simple click or two during setup. In addition to it's features, I like having not just Google as a standard search engine, but having multiple search engines installed and useful as a pull down menu. Didn't see that in IE7...
I have to agree that one of the main reasons people like Firefox is cause of the ability to configure it to you're own taste.Which isn't something you can do with IE.
Posting links would take forever there's so many. So, I'll post the ones we use: AdBlock, FilterG.set, IETab plugin, 1 Click Weather, SmoothWheel, DownloadThemAll, Allow Right Click, and MinimizeToTray. AdBlock/FilterG.set are used to block ads from any site. Whether the ad is a popup, or programmed into the code of the page as a script. IETab plugin allows you to use the genuine IE browser from within Firefox...either as a new tab, or the main window. Some sites such as Windows update will automatically open in an IE window. This is great for those that need Windows Media player support but keep getting that damn page that says you need to use Netscape or IE. It is also a right click, open in New tab feature. You can add sites to this extension to automatically open in IE tabs. 1 Click Weather allows you to view upcoming weather forecasts from the browsers lower information bar, instead of an additional toolbar/searchbar like in IE. Fully customizable to either your area, or one closest to you. With maps, and even doppler radar. SmoothWheel allows a very slow, or fast smooth scrolling effect which rolls the page speed in conjunction with your wheel speed. The slower or faster you scroll, the slower and faster the page scrolls but without any jumping. DownloadThemAll. A unique right click and download feature that comes in handy when you want to grab everything you can from a website all at once. Instead of having to right click individually a million times to gather pics or movies, you simply right click a item, choose a folder, a file type (or all) and click on the download button. AllowRightClick. Self explanatory, but it's supposed to help with websites that try and use Java script to prevent right click downloads. However there are several other methods that defeat that security feature, one of them is Windows itself. The other, well just disable Java in the browser. Minimize to Tray. I gotta hand it to the author of this one. Along with SmoothScroll, this extension works in both Firefox and Thunderbird. When you click on the minimize button, normally FF or TB will minimize to the taskbar. Now with this ext, it minimizes to the system tray. You have to set that option in the extension's options, but it's only one check box (outta three). Most of all extension functions that need to be "in your face" are shown in the browser's information bar. In IE, usually it shows up as an additional toolbar, leaving your page viewing area smaller and smaller with each additional function.
