My network consists of around 10 workstations and one server and one networked printer. recently, all the workstations can see each other by the computer name however, cannot see the server by the name only by ip address. the server is still able to print to the printer. i can ping the server only by the ip and not by the name. any help please.
Need envioronment info. What OS on server? What OS on workstations? DNS running properly on the server? (If you are running Windows 200X Server, which is what I'm assuming, check the DNS Event Log) WINS installed (for win 98 only)?? Is the server set up as a Domain, or just a file server on a workgroup? Provide all details you can, and we'll see if we can get you going again. ~Rich
2003 SERVER XP WORKSTATIONS I THINK DNS IS SET UP PROPERLY I DIDNT SET IT UP. HOW DO I CHECK TO SEE IF SET UP PROPERLY FILE SERVER OF WORKGROUP
Not familiar with 2003. I only deal with 2000 server. I know that 2003 is much different in certain areas, but I dont think this is your issue. Being that this is a workgroup, not a domain, the server should be seen as just another workgroup computer. Can you view the Server in My Network Places? I would check there first. Next I would verify that the Workgroup name is correctly set on the server. I'm leaning towards this being the problem. You can ping an IP all day, but if you are not a member of the same workgroup, you will not be able to ping by name. Just curious. Why not set up a domain? Much more secure, and allows for central administration. Keep us posted. ~Rich
you can't see the server in the workgroup, it's a part of the workgroup. honestly, your guess is as good as mine as why its not a domain. I can to do some consulting, had lots of issues but they dont want to change em, and it was working fine, then i think someone this new employee messed with setting or ran some program and messed it up. I just see it strange that everything is working fine for months then all of a sudden bam, you can't see the server anymore. but no one will say they did anything they just say it was working fine till a certain hour then they could hit the server anymore. i just felt that as kinda odd. like if someone if messing with something they not supposed to be or they try to do something and they really dont know what they are doing.
Try changing the workgroup on the server to something different like TESTWG. Reboot so the changes apply. Then change it back to what it is supposed to be, and reboot again. See if that solves the issue. Resetting the Workgroup name may give it a swift kick in the ass and get it going. Sorry I havent posted recently...been outta town on vacation for the holiday. Keep us posted. ~Rich
