Forum search temporarily disabled

    The last week or so has been bad for our servers, due variety of factors. While we're implementing new, faster routines for the biggest bottlenecks on the site, we've had to remove few features temporarily. Up until next Tuesday or Wednesday, forum search will be disabled and also the forum threads wont carry the "related threads" links at the bottom.

    If you really need to search for something on AfterDawn while the search is disabled, you can always use the site: function in google. That way it is searching google's cache of the site.

    Simply make your search term in google start with

    site:afterdawn.com <search terms here>

    I use that frequently when I only want google results from a single site. For example, I find the site:cisco.com search in google gives me better results than searching from cisco.com's own search

    Yep, we added the G search box to the forum search results page, which now states that the search is disabled, so if you enter something to the search box on our site, the result page will have pre-filled google search box on it.

    I tried the google search for afterdawn and it works just as good as regular search just so everybody knows......

    Yea, the google site search is only as good as the last time the google cache was updated. For some searches like what Neph and ddp would use for spammers it probably isn't effective, but for someone wanting to look up general info or something they remembered seeing a while ago it's a good substitute while the site search is down.

    oofRome, I asked the same thing in the Afterdawn IRC channel earlier and didn't get the reason he was suspended, but I suspect it must be a valid reason. The AD mods are doing a tremendous job in keeping the forums straight, and I know they would not suspend a senior member without good cause.

    any date on when ad search function be back on line properly as google is the pits for looking for spammer multi-posts??

    Of course, I wasn't questioning the validity of the suspension; I was just curious, is all. (And mudearies, too! Lotta banning going on lately)
    But I do agree, the mods are doing fantastic.

    Now if the technitions can get this search running again, I'll be more than content. :)

    Besides Mude what about my favorite Dr. Cool. Seems when it gets hot outside all the fanboys come out of the shadows. Im not sure about Rabbity, just know he was on the hit list with me. Cant wait for the search function to work to see the "contributions" some of these guys make LOL:)

    Too many kids out there whose parents are afraid to smack the crap out of them when they mess up and they're all in the console forums being punks.

    Forum search will be back most likely today, with some changes that I'll detail in later thread. This wont be "final" version of the search, as I plan to include -- finally -- the ability to search by thread titles as well. The major change -- in addition to search being about 20x faster -- is that you wont be able to search by phrase any more.
