http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130037 I got this MSI motherboard for the computer that I'm using right now. It it the first computer that I've built by myself and I'm pretty sure that I "done found me a good'n" when I chose this mobo other other mobos that were PCIExpress x16. I'm not really good at troubleshooting my problems concerning this and other products, but maybe someone here can help me finish up becuase I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150139 This is the videocard I put in my new rig, which works. But compared to other people with similar systems, my benchmark scores really suck. I always get <60 FPS in Counter Strike: Source stress test (oddly, 110 FPS if I'm running it in windowed mode) and a score of about 3400 points on 3dMark06. I'm sure that something's wrong. I sent back my first card, which had the same scores as the above, but it was artifacting really bad. I got my replacement card in today, and was dissapointed when I got repeated results. Most other people are getting 100+ FPS in CS:S stress test with highest settings with this card. My rig: AMD 64 Athlon 4000+ Single Core San Diego MSI k8N nFore 4 SLI X16 Diamond Edition XFX 7900GT Extreme Edition 2GB Corsair XMS Western Digital 74GB 10000RPM ASPIRE 520W Power Supply Xion II Case Logitech X530 5.1 speakers Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard Windows XP Home w/ SP2 Other people have helped me with checking to make sure the RAM's voltage and timings are alright, making sure that the 6 pin power cable is plugged in, getting my video card and nForce 4 drivers updated, disabling the X-fi soundcard and trying it with onboard audio, and some noted that it may be heat. From the reviews on newegg.com, I already know that this card gets hot. I was getting 75 degrees celcius on Counter Strike: Source. I was thinking about getting a better fan, A Zalman VF-900 CU and putting it on there, but still people are getting 100+ FPS on Coutner Strike: Source out of the box. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using the version 84.21 drivers. Thanks in advance. I've asked around on acouple of forums for my framerate issue. Remembering that Google has always pointed to the AfterDawn.com forums when I searched for help with my past hardware issues, I thought that this would be a good place to try to find some answers.
75*C is really hot! I suggest you put an aftermarket fan on your card immediately!!! If you keep running that hot you will definitely have slowdowns with video and maybe even damage to the card. I don't feel comfortable with my cards running over 65*C. Have you tried opening up your case and pointing a desk fan into it? I'm no cooling expert but how is your case ventilation? Do you have anyfans? If water cooled how is the cooler on your pump? Is it working? I heard that these cards run hot but WOW! 75*C!!!!!
Yeah, these cards do run pretty hot. My case has 4 fans in it, and I have a heatsink on my motherboard. But people are still getting framerates much higher than mine out of the box with no new fans. Also, someone told me that it was impossible to get over 100FPS in CS: Source with a resolution of 1280x1024 and max graphical settings with a 7900GT. Is this true?
hi cApN123, is the 84.21 driver the one supplied with the card if so try a newer driver, i usethe drivers from this site http://www.tweaksrus.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=127&Itemid=41/ the 84.37v2 , 84.56v2 rev1 & 91.28v2 are very good. Uninstall driver from hardware manager, restart, then use DCpro (http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html)read the instruction on how to use in safe mode , restatrt, install driver, restart & see if any improvement was made. You should be getting around the 5000 mark in 3Dmark06 with you rig. As for the temps there's a problem with some of the voltage regulators on the back side of the card that heat up to extreme temperatures and cause a safety feature of the bios to trip. When that safety feature trips the cards voltages drop for the memory causing the artifacts, flashing screen, total lockups that a lot of users are experiencing. This isn't just a XFX issue alot of different brand 7900 are having this problem. Try RMA'ing your card again if your not happy with it XFX are really good with there customer surport. Hope this is of some help to you
I've tried 3 different kinds of drivers, I'm very sure that that's not the problem. I've always done my benchmarking in 1280x1024, is that the standard for benchmarking? Someone told me that with a 7900GT, it would be unlikely that I could get over 100FPS in CS:Source stress test or more than 4200 points in 3dmark. He told me that most people run their benchmark tests at 1024x768. Is this right?
I couldn't tell you about the benchmarking resolutions as I have never benched my system. Your friend is probably right. But I CAN tell you that I get over 80FPS in the CS:Source stress test on 1280x1024 with my X850XT and a 7900GT definitely outclasses my card. I'm actually pretty sure that it's a processor bottleneck to some extent with this game. On the other hand I have a major video card bottleneck with every thing but the Source engine and the Crytek engine(FarCry) which are both bottlenecked by my CPU. 75*C is the core shut down tempurature for my card. I don't care what my computer is running. I don't care if it's FarCry 3 at 1600x1200 with max detail at 1000FPS!!! 75*C is WAY too hot for any card. I seriously suggest you invest in a high quality cooler from Zalman or the like. $30 will save you a lot of hardship down the road.
I have discovered something though. 7800GTX 512MB hits 105FPS on CS: Source stress test with an Athlon 64 FX-57. Im not sure about the particulars but you might be hard pressed to break 100FPS. But <60 is still not right. You should easily be hitting 95>FPS at the very least depending on how it agrees with your system. So like I said... maybe invest in some aftermarket cooling for your card.
I have a fan on it's way, Zalman 900CU, but I'm having trouble deciding whether I should send the card back for another replacement or not.
There is something wrong with your setup, i just run the CS:Source stress test & got this result with a single 7800gtx 256mb, 165 opteron @ 2629mhz. Did you have a different card installed on that mobo prior to getting the 7900gt ....
Yeah.. maybe you have driver problems... get Driver Cleaner Pro or something and delete and reinstall your video drivers. Might be your best bet. Don't get me wrong though, you're still gonna need that cooling fan for sure. Going on what jonni3 got you should easily be hitting 120+FPS. His CPU pwns yours but his video power is just under your 7900GT jonni3, I think maybe the guys who ran the stress test I saw were full of it then. Hmm, like I said before though, both your processor and video card WAY outclass mine. I'm gonna OC my CPU soon anyway... I'm thinking 2.4GHz or so. For now I think an average of 85+FPS on stress test is okay for my system. Is the Opteron 165 dual core? I forget. If so you basically have an FX-60 there. Either way it's plenty powerful for any game out there. Though DX10 hardware will render your 7800GTX obselete as it does not have enough power to play the most technically advanced games at max settings(points at ES4: Oblivion) That gets to be a major problem as the 7800GTX is pretty much on the top of the heap with unimagineable power. The inability to run these high-end games with max settings kinda smashes the card against a brick wall. It makes me wonder if the DX10 cards will be able to pull it off either. Current generation hardare is far from max settings or even max resolution on that game. They might... they might not.
Yeah kinda sucks about DX10..... yeah the 165 is dual core & less than a third of the price of a FX-60, i got the 7800 last year when it was the top dog, oh well lets see what kinda eye candy DX10 brings
Thats the spirit! lol Just think though. When DX10 comes out the GeForce 6+7 and Radeon X1000 series' will take a huge price hit. I can bet that next year the X1900XTX 512MB will still be an awesome performer. Oh, **** my ****ing birds just decided to have a flap frenzy and sprayed the keyboard, the monitor, and myself with water >:I
jonni3, what resolution are you running at? If that's 1280x1024, then I definately know that I need to get a replacement. It's not a driver issue, this is a brand new computer from the ground up.
Thx for your input, I've decided that I'm going to return this brand for a refund and try an eVGA 7900GT card, even though I know that all 7900GTs have had problems regaurdless of what brand it was. Hopefully this one will work like it's supposed to after I put the VF900 fan on it
