It has always handled cartoons and computer animated graphics very well for me. I have only used CCE, but many on here say that ProCoder handles animation better than CCE. I never use any special settings, just keep everything at default except I set CCE to 3 passes.

What Encoder are you using and how do you put the movie onto your computer?

Interesting, I have Spirited Away but haven't tried to make a back-up of it yet. I'm out of town right now, but if you haven't solved the problem by Sunday evening, I'll run it through DVD-RB, use CCE, and rip with AnyDVD and see if my results are like yours. BTW, does the grey screen apear when you try to play the files directly from the computer?

Rip the movie with dvd decrypter (file mode) to your HD with anydvd (6.0.1.1) in the background, make sure you have decrypter set up properly.
    1) Tools, settings, general, and untick check for structure protection
    2) Tools, settings,I/O select ELBYCDIO

    Set CCE to 3 passes

Also do not steal space from extras.

If you want to get rid of certain stuff to free space use Vobblanker first.

Before you burn to a disc in case the same thing happens watch it on your pc first with nero or any other prog you have.

DVD-RB with CCE seems to work fine with most anime DVD's. I have backed up several episodic anime series without a hitch.

I would follow the general advice with using anydvd with DVD Decrtptor in file mode for best results.

that is good advice. i always play the ripped folder back from my hdd on my pc, especially after using remake or vobblanker. i seldom use dvd decrypter since anydvd has incorperated a rip to hdd feature.

i seldom do more than 2 passes. the only time i do more passes is if the folder is more than 7.0 gb (which is not to often since i edit out the garbage with remake). even then i really can't see a difference between 2 and 3 passes.

There has been problems (bugs) with Anydvd's rip function in previous versions, but it has been sorted out with the lastest releases 6.0.1.1.

I just remembered that I did have a problem with 2 movies that come to mind.

    1. Spirited Away
    2. Castle in the Sky

Both movies seem to reencode well withDVD-RB/ CCE basic.

I had no problem with the playback on the HD, but it kept on freezing on the first 30 - 60 seconds of the movie on the stand alone.

One might think it was the media, 2 burns on Ti-Yo and one with Verbs with the same results. I think I used Intervideo DVD Copy 4 for these odd-ball discs and all played fine.

When I do anime I set the "qual prec" to 24 in the cce settings advanced options and passes to 3

If it is an OLD anime that is grainy and needs HEAVY cleaning paste this into the avisynth filter:

    ConvertToYUY2(interlaced=true).peachsmoother(noisereduction=30,stability=20,dospatial=true,spatial=100,dot=false,readout=false,showmotion=false)._2DCleanYUY2(thresholdY=4,radiusX=2,radiusY=2).FluxSmoothT(5)

It does wonders on some anime

whoops to use that filter you will have to get the peachsmoother, 2dcleaner, and fluxsmootht dll's off the net and paste them into the avisynth plugins folder in program files

    ;)
