Could someone explain this to me like what is the difference between this and the regular ide connection and are they both the same or different
Regular IDE is called PATA. Parallel ATA, but mostly just reffered to as ATA. SATA, is Serial ATA, and transfers data serially, instead of parallely. SATA is a newer technology and is coming standard on new systems. It's faster than PATA, and uses a small thiner cable instead of the large ribbon cables. Some pictures of the differences: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
IDE has a transfer rate of up to 133 MB/sec, a good SATA will have a rate of 3Gb/sec.. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Seagate_SATA.html Obviously you have to have a SATA HD for a SATA connection. An IDE HD only has an IDE connector, so NO you cannot use any HD as a SATA!
